As those of us who reside on one of the Hawaiian islands or any hurricane prone areas, we know the importance of keeping up with weather trackers. So far, in the pacific it’s amping up to be a busy storm season. While we hope for the best, we want to be as prepared as we can be for just in case. Being prepared ahead of time before a hurricane hits can hopefully help us prevent or minimize an emergency situation for us, our families and our properties. Therefore, I’m including in this post the Hurricane preparedness checklist from the American Redcross.org website. This checklist goes over what to do before, during and after a hurricane. You can also go to their page yourself and download this checklist in a different language if you prefer. Hope this helps. Stay safe and prepared.

As the summer heat turns up, remember to stay hydrated. That means not only drinking enough water, but remembering to replenish electrolytes as needed. Some early signs of mild dehydration include: feeling thirsty, a dry mouth, tiredness, dizziness, and dark yellow urine.

Mosquitoes 🦟 can cause several major illnesses such as malaria, dengue, West Nile virus, Zika, chikungunya, and yellow fever. Prevention is the best place to start to combat spread of mosquito born infectious diseases. Below are some tips found from a Pinellas County Florida’s page that are good for any of us who live in areas that tend to have lots of mosquitoes. 🦟

DO NOT leave pets, children, the elderly or disabled in hot vehicles!!! According to Kids and Car Safety, “ The Danger of Hot Cars- A car acts like a greenhouse, quickly capturing heat from the sun and retaining it. The internal temperature spikes rapidly in the first few minutes, putting children and pets at immediate risk because their bodies heat up significantly faster than adults. A child's body temperature rises three to five times faster than an adult's, so a hot car can quickly become dangerous. Dogs left in cars face the same risk.” According to Consumer Reports, “testing found that even when it was 61° F outside, the temperature inside a closed car reached more than 105° F in just 1 hour, an extremely dangerous and potentially fatal level for a child or pet.” It is a misconception to think that simply cracking a window or parking in the shade is enough to prevent dangerous levels and effects from the heat.

As we continue to enjoy our summer, we may find ourselves spending more time in and around the water. For safety purposes when enjoying water activities, especially with children and those who cannot swim or who are not strong swimmers, it is optimal to have a dedicated “water watcher” (“a designated adult who agrees to provide uninterrupted, 100% active supervision of children during any in-water activity.” Even better if they are cpr certified) In addition to that, knowing your and those in your groups limits, using proper and approved gear for water safety such as life vests, etc, is highly recommended. If an emergency does ensue, it is imperative to act fast within your training so that you don’t become a drowning victim yourself. First, assess scene for safety, shout for help and immediately remove the victim from the water if you can do so safely. Next, assess them for consciousness, breathing, pulse, and call 911 if you or someone has not done so already and proceed with the next steps of first aid and cpr for a drowning victim.
