A concussion is a traumatic injury to the brain usually caused by blunt trauma. Immediate symptoms can include memory loss, balance difficulties, and loss of consciousness.

A severe concussion can cause long term effects. Sometimes it takes decades for these effects to become evident. Long term effects include mood changes, personality changes, severe depression, psychosis, dementia, and movement disorders.

One severe concussion can lead to what is known as chronic traumatic encephalopathy . CTE is similar to Alzheimer’s dementia as they both cause progressive brain volume loss and ultimate destruction of the brain. There is no cure.

The pharmaceutical companies Biogen and Eisai said on Tuesday that a drug they are developing for Alzheimer’s disease had slowed the rate of cognitive decline in a large late-stage clinical trial.

The strong results boost the drug’s chances of winning approval and offer renewed hope for a class of Alzheimer’s drugs that have repeatedly failed or generated mixed results.
