🚨 EMS Intern Day was another smash hit! 🚑💥

Our incoming interns spent the day getting hands-on with the incredible men and women of Houston Fire Department EMS, learning the fundamentals of prehospital emergency care through real-world demonstrations and interactive scenarios.

From practicing tourniquet application and cervical spine immobilization 🩹 to patient transport techniques, vehicle extrication, and even cutting up cars with rescue equipment 🚒, offering a unique look into the teamwork and skill that define EMS.

A huge thank you to our outstanding EMS faculty, fellows, residents, and our partners at HFD  for sharing your time, knowledge, and passion with our interns. Experiences like these are invaluable as our future EM physicians begin their training.

2026 EM SonoGames Recap 🩺⚡🏆 

Competition was on full display at this year's annual EM SonoGames as our residents put their ultrasound skills to the test through a series of fast-paced, hands-on challenges focused on teamwork, critical thinking, and point-of-care ultrasound.

Congratulations to Team Luber on taking home this year's SonoGames Championship, and to House Wentland for earning the Family Cash Prize with the highest combined team score! 👏💰

A huge thank you to our Ultrasound Section, especially Dr. Katy Larimore, along with all of our faculty, staff, and residents who helped organize another outstanding event. We also appreciate the Cizik Nursing School for hosting us this year while construction continues at the medical school.

🚀🌎 Today, one of our own is headed to space!

We are proud to celebrate Dr. Anil Menon, a valued member of our Space Medicine program, as he begins his first mission aboard the International Space Station. His launch marks an exciting milestone in a career dedicated to advancing human spaceflight, aerospace medicine, and the future of exploration.

Also featured are several individuals who have helped shape and strengthen our Space Med Fellowship over the years, who were on site for today's launch:

We're proud to see our own Dr. Carrie Bakunas featured by KPRC 2, sharing important reminders about preventing rare but serious bacterial infections, including necrotizing fasciitis.

Her advice: avoid swimming with open cuts, scrapes, fresh tattoos, or razor burns, wash thoroughly after swimming, and seek medical attention if a wound becomes increasingly painful, swollen, or red. While these infections are uncommon, early recognition and treatment are critical ❤️‍🩹.

🚑🫀 A great day of hands-on learning at the McGovern SIM Center!

Our residents worked through high-fidelity simulation scenarios focused on ACLS, code leadership, team communication, and point-of-care ultrasound. Each case concluded with a comprehensive debrief, giving residents the opportunity to reflect, refine, and grow together.

From our interns learning new skills to our sr. residents sharpening existing ones, it was a fun, collaborative day!. 👏⚡

🚀 Reaching New Heights at AsMA 2026! Our Space Med Fellowship continues to help shape the future of human spaceflight 👨‍🚀🛰️

At the 2026 Aerospace Medical Association Annual Scientific Meeting, Dr. Samuel Beger presented UTHealth Houston's work in astronaut medical training and commercial spaceflight research.

His presentations highlighted:
- Hands-on medical training 🩺 for non-physician astronauts through collaborations with NASA, KBR, and commercial spaceflight partners ✨
- Research using continuous glucose monitoring during missions including Inspiration4, Polaris Dawn, and Fram2 to better understand human health in space📡

As humans venture farther from Earth, emergency medicine continues to play a critical role in preparing crews to recognize and respond to medical emergencies in some of the most resource-limited environments imaginable. 🌕🚀

Congrats to Dr. Beger and our entire Space Med team for representing us on the international stage! 👏🌎

🎓✨ A day full of celebration, reflection, and new beginnings for the Class of 2026.

The day began with one final resident photoshoot on the 🚁 Life Flight deck, a special opportunity to reflect on the countless shifts, unforgettable moments, and lifelong friendships built throughout residency. All while overlooking the city that many have called home during this incredible journey. For some, this marked their final days in the H as they prepare to begin exciting new chapters across the country. 🌆❤️

Later that morning, we gathered for our annual Graduation Ceremony where we proudly recognized both our graduating residents and fellows as they were presented with their certificates marking the completion of years of dedication and sacrifice. 📜👏 We also had the privilege of honoring several outstanding residents, nurses, and APPs with special awards recognizing the incredible impact they have made on our dept and the people around them. 🏆

While we will miss each and every one of you, know this: you will always have a home here in our UTH-EM family. 🏥⚡

🧠⚕️ STEM in action! 🚑❤️

We were excited to welcome students participating in the CEF in STEM "You Be The Soultion Nat'l Challenge to UTHealth Houston for a hands-on EM training experience! 🌟

These bright young minds spent the day learning lifesaving skills, including:

❤️ High-quality CPR
⚡ Proper AED use
🩸 Tourniquet application
🦴 Lower extremity splinting

Using realistic, life-size simulation manikins, students had the opportunity to practice real-world emergency response techniques while working alongside our team. 👏

A special thank you to our incredible Simulation Team for creating such an engaging and interactive experience. Your dedication helped make this event both educational and memorable for everyone involved! 🙌
