6 Tips for Helping a Loved One Eat

1. Create a comfortable environment
Reduce distractions and make sure the person is comfortable before beginning.

2. Make sure they are sitting upright
Good positioning can make mealtime more comfortable and safer.

3. Give them time
Don't rush. Allow plenty of time between bites.

4. Encourage independence
If they can hold a utensil, choose their food, or take bites themselves safely, let them participate.

5. Pay attention to their cues
Notice when they're full, tired, uncomfortable, or simply need a break.

6. Make mealtime about more than food
Conversation, familiar foods, music, and companionship can make meals a meaningful part of the day.
