Twin brothers Brandon and Bradley Gonzales had always faced life side by side, but neither expected the same serious health challenge to disrupt their active lives.

When Brandon began tiring easily and experiencing back pain, his pediatrician referred the family to Timothy Borden, MD, a pediatric orthopedic surgeon at UT Physicians, who diagnosed him with severe scoliosis. Bradley later received the same diagnosis after experiencing discomfort while gaming. Scoliosis may run in families, but for twins to receive the same diagnosis and undergo similar treatment is a rare occurrence.

Borden performed Brandon’s spine surgery first, giving him a path back to the active life he loved. More than a year later, the family faced surgery again when Bradley’s condition continued to worsen. Today, both brothers are moving with improved mobility and enjoying their active lives again.

Read how compassionate care helped Brandon and Bradley face treatment at different times and return stronger together. https://www.utphysicians.com/story/twin-brothers-with-scoliosis/

Juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA) is an autoimmune disease that can affect children as young as 1 year old. Because it doesn’t always cause pain, it can go unnoticed by parents and even healthcare providers. Without treatment, JIA can permanently affect a child's joints, growth, and even their vision.
