Todaty I made a little festive creation. Steamed mountain yam, mashed until silky smooth, rolled into soft round bites. Then crowned with warm blueberry compote that gently melts down the sides.

Chinese New Year is here, carrying the rhythm of renewal and hope. A Year of Stallions, vibrant and energetic, reminds me of growth, resilience, and strength that run wild and free. Every new year invites reflection, and for me, it often leads back to the foods that shaped my childhood. Lotus root rises from the mud yet remains pure and whole, its connected chambers symbolizing continuity and family bonds. A bowl of lotus root soup at the turn of the year feels like more than nourishment. It feels like honoring where we came from while stepping forward with strength and grace.

Cold salads look fresh. Clean. Healthy. But health is not one size fits all.

For some bodies, especially at certain stages of life, cold lettuce is simply too much of a shock. The body does not reject it loudly at first. It whispers through bloating, fatigue, coughing at night, or a stomach that never feels quite settled.
