📸 Think of panoramic imaging as ultrasound's wide-angle view.

By stitching sequential images together as the transducer moves across the anatomy, panoramic imaging lets us visualize structures that simply won't fit within a conventional ultrasound field of view.

Why might that be useful?

🔹 See the bigger picture: Display large lesions or long structures in a single continuous image.

🔹 Show anatomical relationships: Demonstrate where a finding sits in relation to surrounding landmarks.

🔹 Document extent: Particularly useful for elongated anatomy such as muscles and tendons or for masses that extend beyond a single field of view.

🔹 Measure beyond the screen: Depending on the system, panoramic imaging can allow measurements of structures too large to capture in one conventional image.

🔹 Communicate more clearly: One overview image can make the location and extent of a finding easier for others to understand than a series of disconnected images.

You'll see panoramic imaging used especially in superficial and MSK applications, but its usefulness isn't limited to one specialty.

The catch? A good panoramic image depends on a slow, steady sweep with consistent transducer contact and orientation. Movement, changing planes, or uneven pressure can distort the reconstructed anatomy.

Research has found that spending just 10 minutes interacting with a dog before an exam can help reduce students’ stress and improve their mood.

Will they help you remember the Doppler equation? Maybe not.

🧠 Monday Brain Warm-Up!

Which adjustment directly increases the Nyquist limit?

If you chose A. Increase the PRF/scale, you got it! ✅

The Nyquist limit is equal to ½ the PRF, so increasing the PRF directly increases the Nyquist limit and allows higher Doppler shifts to be sampled without aliasing.

But those distractors weren't completely innocent:

🔹 Shift the baseline: Can change how the available display range is allocated, but it does not change the Nyquist limit.

🔹 Decrease the transmit frequency: Can reduce the Doppler shift and therefore help reduce aliasing, but it does not increase the Nyquist limit.

🔹 Increase the Doppler angle: A larger angle produces a smaller Doppler shift and may reduce aliasing, but again, the Nyquist limit itself hasn't changed.

The registry loves questions where several answers could affect what you see, but only one answers exactly what was asked.

For the past 12 years, Julia Drose has been an incredibly important part of ESP, sharing her expertise and passion for fetal echocardiography with thousands of sonographers along the way.
As Julia steps away from teaching our Fetal Echo course, we want to take a moment to recognize just how much she has given to ESP and to our learners. Her depth of knowledge, years of experience, and commitment to sonography education have made a lasting impact on so many.
We are especially grateful for the time and care Julia will give over the next few months to help prepare and support the instructor stepping into the Fetal Echo course. It means so much to us that even as she closes this chapter with ESP, she has helped ensure that our learners will continue to receive the thoughtful, expert instruction they have come to expect.
Julia, thank you for 12 incredible years of teaching, mentorship, and dedication to ESP and the sonography community. We are so fortunate to have had you on our team, and we wish you nothing but the very best in whatever comes next.

Long shifts can be hard on your feet. 👟

If you spend your day standing, scanning, and moving from patient to patient, consider keeping a second pair of supportive shoes nearby. A mid-shift shoe swap can change pressure points and how your feet are being loaded, giving tired feet a little reset for the rest of the day.

It’s a small change, but sometimes the little things make a long day feel a little more manageable.

Another dynamic use of ultrasound: watching what your tongue is doing while you talk.

Ultrasound tongue imaging places the transducer beneath the chin to visualize the tongue surface in real time during speech.

Speech-language pathologists can use these images as visual biofeedback, allowing patients to actually watch how their tongue moves while producing different sounds and compare their movements with the desired tongue position.
