Every child deserves the chance to just be a kid ♥️

This year for Family Advocacy Day, Texas Children’s patients Brielle and Brooks visited Washington D.C. to share their stories directly with lawmakers and advocates for the care, support and resources children and families need on their toughest days. Family Advocacy helps ensure every child has a chance to heal, grow, play and reclaim childhood.

This Family Advocacy Day, we’re celebrating families like Brielle’s - families who never stop fighting for the care their children need.

From her very first days of life, Brielle has lived with epilepsy. As she grew, her seizures became more complex and increasingly difficult to control, affecting nearly every part of her life.

Brielle and her family found a care team that was willing to dig deeper at Texas Children’s, and through advanced testing, research and specialized treatment, her doctors worked to better understand her unique brain and create a path toward improved seizure control.

Stories like Brielle’s are a reminder of why family advocacy matters. When families have access to the care and support their children need, kids have the opportunity to just be kids.

Brooks’ story began at the 20-week ultrasound when his family learned something was wrong with his heart, and soon after received the diagnosis of hypoplastic left heart syndrome (HLHS).

Brooks received highly specialized care at Texas Children’s starting with a rare fetal cardiac procedure in utero, followed by open heart surgery just days after birth. Through months in the cardiac ICU, his care team supported Brooks and his family through every step, celebrating progress both big and small.

Today, Brooks is discovering the joys of childhood made possible by the care that gave him a chance at life. On Family Advocacy Day, stories like Brooks’ remind us why advocating for children and families is so important, ensuring they have access to the expert care and support they need at every stage of their journey.

Sometimes all it takes is a few deep breaths 😌

In seconds, you can slow your heart rate and create a little more calm in the moment.

Checking in with your child doesn’t have to feel like a big serious conversation. For Mental Health Awareness Month, pediatric psychologist Dr. Monika Parikh shares 5 ways parents can check in on their child’s emotional well-being ❤️

1. Make check-ins part of everyday conversation - Talking regularly about feelings can help harder conversations feel more natural later on.

2. Ask questions that need more than a one-word answer - Try asking, “What was the best and hardest part of your day?” instead of just “How was school?”

3. Use calm, low-pressure moments - Car rides, walks or dinner can feel more comfortable than sitting down for a formal talk.

4. Let them open up at their own pace - Not every child or teen is ready to talk right away, and giving them space can help build trust.

5. Show healthy ways to handle emotions - Talking openly about your own feelings and coping skills can help kids learn it’s okay to ask for help.

Memorial Day weekend is here, but before the pool parties, road trips and backyard BBQs begin, here are 5 important safety reminders for families this weekend, courtesy of Kristen Beckworth, manager for the Center for Childhood Injury Prevention:

🌊 Always watch children around water - Keep kids within arm’s reach at pools, lakes, kiddie pools, bathtubs or anywhere water collects. Drowning can happen quickly and during “non-swim times."

🏊🏻‍♀️ Assign a dedicated “Water Watcher” - During parties or family gatherings, make sure one adult is focused only on supervising children in or near the water. No phones, texting or distractions.

🧴 Use layers of protection - Install pool fences, locked gates and alarms. Enroll children in swim lessons early. Multiple safety measures help prevent accidents before they happen.

🚗 Protect kids from hot cars - As summer heat ramps up, temperatures inside a car can become fatal within minutes, even on cloudy days or with the windows cracked. Never leave a child alone in a vehicle, and always check the backseat before walking away.

🚨 Stay alert and act fast in emergencies - Summer fun means more kids around pools, parks and cars. If you see a child alone in a hot car or in danger near water, call 911 immediately. Seconds matter.

Share these safety reminders with your friends and family ☀️

Three generations. One calling ❤️

This Mother’s Day, we celebrate the women who care for others in both profession and legacy, passed from one generation to the next.

“My grandmother served as a nurse during World War II and my mom was a nurse as well, so it was always part of my world. I grew up hearing their stories and seeing the impact they had on people during some of their most vulnerable moments.” — Katie Norwood, third-generation registered nurse, outpatient neurology clinic

From recovery to reunion ❤️

Days before graduation, Melanie's life changed after a severe car accident. A year after completing a long recovery journey, she returned to Texas Children's, not as a patient, but to thank the team that helped her heal.
