If I had a dollar for every pilates student who came into the studio saying that their hips hurt or their lower back is so tight or they canโt squat below parallel โ Iโd be rich! Those tight hips and lower back are related. Not only does it limit your mobility but over time, compressed hips can contribute to bursitis, labral tears, arthritis and even hip replacement.
These stretches are great and I highly recommend that our students stretch regularly. But the work and dynamic stretch in every Pilates movement is much more effective.
Itโs common for hip muscles to become locked โ stretching or foam rolling cannot effectively release them. Neurokinetic therapyยฎ can identify what muscles are locked and what muscle will allow them to unlock. One or two sessions may be all it takes to unlock your hips so that these stretches are helpful.
I recently unlocked one studentโs hips and gave her the same stretches. She could barely squat to parallel. Sheโd been doing these stretches but was not making progress. After two NKT ยฎ sessions, her squat was much, much deeper. Once I unlocked her obliques, her lower back lengthened.
More importantly, consider a Pilates practice so that youโre not always fighting that mobility battle, youโre winning.
