September is Prostate Cancer Awareness Month, and throughout the month, we’re raising awareness of the advances that have transformed prostate cancer imaging.
As MRI changed the way physicians could evaluate the prostate, another advancement was taking place: scientists were learning how to image prostate cancer at the molecular level.
One of the biggest advances began with the identification of PSMA — prostate-specific membrane antigen, a protein commonly found in high amounts on prostate cancer cells.
Scientists developed specialized radioactive tracers designed to target PSMA, helping make PSMA-expressing cells visible during PET imaging.
In 2020, the FDA approved the first PSMA-targeted PET imaging drug in the United States, opening an important new chapter in prostate cancer imaging.
Today, PSMA PET/CT combines molecular information from PET with detailed anatomy from CT and can help physicians detect and locate prostate cancer — including recurrent or metastatic disease that may be difficult to identify with conventional imaging.
