When a player takes a blow to the head, medical teams have only minutes to assess the situation and determine the safest course of action. Understanding how concussions occur, recognizing potential symptoms, and knowing when to seek medical evaluation are critical for athletes at every level of the game.

In the latest installment of our Soccer Injuries Explained series, Summer Ott, PsyD, associate professor and director of the Concussion Program in the Department of Orthopedic Surgery at UTHealth Houston, affiliated with Memorial Hermann Rockets Sports Medicine Institute, shares what coaches, parents, and players should know about concussion recognition and safe return to play.

Because caring for growing bodies takes more than expertise — it takes heart, compassion, and the understanding that every child deserves the chance to thrive.

When Alyssa and Jared experienced two life-changing accidents just months apart, their family faced fear, uncertainty, and an incredibly difficult road ahead.

Alyssa suffered a fractured femur after a scooter accident at just 5 years old. Months later, Jared endured a devastating farm injury that nearly cost him his leg.

Through every surgery, rehabilitation session, and recovery milestone, the Pediatric Orthopedics Program at Children’s Memorial Hermann Hospital, affiliated with McGovern Medical School at UTHealth Houston, was there for their family.

Pediatric orthopedic surgeons Lindsay Crawford, MD, and Jessica Traver, MD, helped guide Alyssa and Jared through their recoveries with expertise, compassion, and unwavering support. Today, Alyssa is back to thriving in sports and gymnastics, and Jared has returned to an active college life after overcoming tremendous odds.

Their story is a testament to the power of specialized pediatric orthopedic care and the resilience of young patients.🧡
