After tearing her ACL in each knee while playing volleyball, Koryn Johnson faced the possibility of losing the sport she loved, not once, but twice.

Her journey with UT Physicians began after her first ACL tear in high school, when her athletic trainer connected her with Bonnie P. Gregory, MD, an orthopedic surgeon and also team physician for athletes at Koryn’s school. Dr. Gregory performed ACL reconstruction and meniscus repair, followed by rehabilitation to help Koryn regain her strength and mobility.

Three years later, Koryn tore the ACL in her other knee while playing college volleyball. This time, she knew exactly who she wanted by her side and returned to Dr. Gregory for her second surgery and recovery.

Through two ACL tears and two challenging recoveries, Koryn made it back to the court both times. She credits her comebacks to her determination and the support of those around her, including the surgeon she still calls her hero.

Hayden Anz, MD, is officially an orthopedic surgery residency graduate! Before starting his next chapter, he took a moment to thank the people who got him here.

"Brittany, you have been my foundation through it all. You (and the pups) have been patient, compassionate, and understanding through the difficult times, and you have helped me achieve and celebrate every victory along the way."

On his parents: "Dad, your unwavering confidence that I could achieve anything I put my mind to has always made me feel like I can overcome any challenge that I face. Mom, you were my greatest cheerleader, and I know you would be so proud of this moment."

And on his time with us: "Thank you for training me to be the surgeon and person that I am today. I am so grateful for the mentors, colleagues, and friends that I have gained over these past five years."

Congratulations, Dr. Anz! Next stop: Hand and Microsurgery Fellowship at Washington University in St. Louis.

This past weekend, our orthopedic sports medicine fellows took part in a specialized hands-on lab experience in Naples, Florida. An opportunity to complement clinical training with focused, practical education in arthroscopy techniques.

Our Chair, Walter Lowe, MD, Fellowship Director, Steven Flores, MD, and several of our sports medicine faculty joined our fellows for an immersive experience designed to strengthen their technical skills.

We’re grateful to Arthrex for supporting this educational opportunity and, most importantly, for providing our fellows with access to specialized resources that help advance their training.

A family vacation in Turks and Caicos took an unexpected turn when 13-year-old Claire Macdonel was bitten on the hand by a barracuda. The uncommon injury damaged multiple joints, tendons and ligaments.

After returning home, Claire underwent complex surgery performed by UTHealth Houston orthopedic surgeon Hannah Dineen, MD. She is now recovering and participating in therapy—and the experience has not changed her dream of becoming a marine biologist.

Claire’s courage and positive outlook are an inspiring reminder of the resilience that can carry someone forward after a frightening and unexpected injury.
