I’ve been a “horse girl” all my life. With a bit of a gap, but I found my way back to horses after moving to Texas in 2015.

In 2018 I bought Jordan, she was to be my “bronze medal” horse, that was MY plan. Oh how she laughed at my plan 😂 What she actually came for, amongst teaching me to be better generally, and to give us the experience of USDF Finals in Kentucky, was to educate. She was nothing if not a thorough teacher.

I learned so many things during my time with her, not things I necessarily thought I needed to know about at one point 😅 but all of them have come in useful later. Muscle disease, osteoarthritis, pedal osteitis, suspensory branch problems, fibrotic myopathy, dental fracture, neck issues, tmj, anhydrosis, allergies, cellulitis, periostial abscess, puncture wounds, colitis… I could go on 🥹 My vet would joke, I take the list of all the things this could be, throw it away, then open the book of weird things it never is at a random page and that’s what we’re dealing with 🙃 Even her death (which was an unexpected emergency euthanasia) turned out to be something that no one had ever experienced in a horse without severe trauma (which she showed no signs of).

I’ve had many people over the years ask me why, why did you keep going with that horse, why invest so much? Why did I literally buy a place to live where she could live with me and I could provide the care she needed? She was my best friend, my favourite creature to ever have lived, and while she would occasionally drive me crazy, she was worth every minute of stress and I would do it all over again.

Truly she was a gift, and she put me on the path of helping horses for a living; I will always be grateful for that.

She has also given me the gift of understanding. Because now, when you come to me, frustrated and unsure, knowing that something isn’t right, but perhaps not having been listened to or understood, where you arrive is to someone who will listen, to both you and your horse, without judgement, with the ear of experience, who also knows when to proceed with bodywork and when to refer.

Left Texas 4 weeks ago today; feels like I’ve been back in England both forever and the blink of an eye.

Hard not to get frustrated when things take time to get sorted, but trying to take each day as it comes and definitely making progress.

I am now fully insured and have wheels 🤩
I’ve finalized new client forms, veterinary referal forms and session reports, done all the boring stuff like updating my website etc, so I’m ready to get going with some actual work 🙌

It feels both a long time and no time at all since I was doing this every day…

I left Texas 4 weeks ago this coming friday, so it’s not really been very long at all, and I feel like a lot has happened but also things are perhaps not moving as fast as I would like all at the same time 😅

Working with horses every day is a great way to spend your days, and I’m hoping to get back to it sooner than later.

Still coming to terms with how different life looks, the last three years have been challenging to say the least.

It’s one thing to pick yourself up and start over once, it’s something else to keep doing it through multiple losses and exponentially difficult circumstances.

People can tell you things like, wow you’re so strong, and “I don’t know how you do it”, but the reality is, what choice do you have? To lose your home, more than once, and not by your own choice, to lose a parent and not be able to be there, to lose animals that are connected to your actual soul in ways that make it painful to exist without them, to see your children struggle with these changes and not be able to fix it for them is hard.

I defintely don’t have it in me to give up, although surrendering to the idea that everything that is now gone had to leave to make way for what is to come is a tough one to swallow sometimes.

But I know things will be ok, because I’ve built a life before and I can do it again. 🙌💪💕

If the next 10 years of my life hold the same level of growth and opportunity as the last, the same chances to meet new people and make new friends, new horses and other animals, (the kids already have their hearts set on cats and a dog 😅) then things will look very different again in 10 years from now.

I hope so, because it’s not just a job for me (the animals) it’s everything. I think people who don’t connect with animals or horses that way will just never understand it.

I have recently relocated back to the UK from Texas, where I’ve spent the last 7 years working full time as an equine therapist, working with performance horses across multiple disciplines, as well as leisure horses, lesson & therapeutic riding horses.

I mean, it’s not a bad place to be right?!

I miss this place and Jazz more than words can say…

But I am wishing good luck to her and everyone else (especially Michelle and Sky!) at WDAA World Finals this coming week.

I can’t beleive it’s been a year since I was there, or how much has changed in that year.

I wish I was going to be there with you guys this year, but I really do hope you all have a great time!
