This month at the LinkD Collin County group, we heard a deeply personal and moving story about the impact of addiction. It served as a powerful reminder that addiction can affect anyone, regardless of age, background, or circumstance. If you know someone who is struggling, consider reaching out. Sometimes the most meaningful thing we can offer is support, compassion, and a helping hand.
Did you know that drug-related overdoses treated in Dallas County hospitals increased from 2,419 cases in 2018 to 3,818 cases in 2023? While prevention and recovery efforts continue to expand, fentanyl remains the leading driver of opioid-related deaths across North Texas.
When we think about addiction, we often picture younger adults, but seniors are also at risk. Chronic pain, prescription opioid use, social isolation, grief, depression, and substance misuse can all contribute to addiction among older adults. As our population ages, it is increasingly important for healthcare providers, senior living communities, and families to focus on education, mental health support, screening, and recovery resources.
Addiction is not a moral failure, it is a health issue that deserves understanding, treatment, and hope. Together, we can help break the stigma and support those who need it most.
