Intrusive thoughts. Postpartum OCD. Postpartum psychosis. They are not the same thing.

With so much discussion surrounding the Clancy case right now, I think it’s important to talk about something that is often misunderstood: not every scary postpartum thought means the same thing.

Intrusive thoughts can be common during the postpartum period. They can be disturbing, unwanted, and completely inconsistent with who you are and what you value.

But sometimes those thoughts become part of an OCD cycle. Intrusive thought ➡️ anxiety ➡️ compulsion ➡️ temporary relief.
And sometimes postpartum symptoms can involve a loss of connection with reality, such as hallucinations or delusions.

The difference matters!!

The wrong interpretation can lead to symptoms being overreacted to, minimized, or misunderstood. That’s why seeing a provider who understands perinatal mental health can be so important.

You don’t have to diagnose yourself.
You don’t have to figure out what your symptoms “mean.”
Tell someone. Get an accurate assessment. You’ll get support 💕

❤️ Save this post for yourself or please share to spread awareness for new parents who may need this information ❤️

And if you’ve experienced intrusive thoughts during pregnancy or postpartum, you’re not alone. If you’re comfortable, share your experience in the comments—your story may help someone else feel less alone.

If you or someone you know is experiencing hallucinations, delusions, severe confusion, or a loss of connection with reality after giving birth, seek emergency psychiatric care immediately.

Calling all NICU mamas 🫶

I have the honor of writing a blog through about the NICU experience and maternal mental health, and I want to make sure it reflects the voices of moms who have lived it.

If you’ve had a baby in the NICU, what do you wish someone had told you? What do you wish other moms knew about the emotional experience? Is there something you felt, struggled with, or learned that you think deserves to be talked about?

I’d be so grateful if you’d share your thoughts in the comments or send me a DM if you’d prefer to keep it private. Your insights may be included anonymously to help other NICU moms feel seen, understood, and a little less alone 💕

Birth Trauma Awareness Week is a reminder that birth doesn’t always happen the way we hoped, and for many parents, the emotional impact lasts long after delivery❤️‍🩹

This year’s theme, “The Cost of Birth Trauma,” highlights that the effects often extend far beyond the birth itself.

Trauma is subjective. A birth experience can be traumatic even if everything appeared medically “okay.” Feeling frightened, powerless, unheard, dismissed, or unsupported can have a lasting impact. Research suggests that up to 1 in 3 birthing parents describe their birth as traumatic.

Birth trauma can show up as avoidance, hypervigilance, intrusive memories, or persistent negative thoughts. It may affect bonding with your baby, relationships, feeding decisions, future family planning, your sense of safety, returning to work, and so much more.

If your birth experience left you carrying more than you expected, know that your experience is valid. You don’t have to minimize what happened because you and your baby are physically okay. You deserve to be heard, supported, and given a space to heal🫶

If this message resonates, heart it, save it, or share it 💜
Let’s increase education and support around traumatic births.
