Just over a year ago, I ran my first ultra at the Badwater Cape Fear 50k. The night before the race, my family and I watched King of Moab, the documentary following Max Jolliffe’s win at the Moab 240.
Watching someone race 240 miles was hard to comprehend when I was about to toe the line at 32.
Since then, I’ve been slowly prestiging up the distance ladder. A 50 miler in Bryce Canyon. A 100k in the mountains of western North Carolina. 107 miles at a backyard ultra in Texas.
What that journey has given me more than anything is a reframed mindset. I watched .dowdle run 307 miles and look like he had a few more days in him. Two people have now run sub-2 marathons. I used to look at those things and think, “How is that even possible?” Now I think, “That’s what happens when you compound the right stimulus with clear, committed goals.”
The most interesting part of getting into this world has been taking that same mindset back into everything else.
How much more could I do to help people through Telos? Where can I think differently and do something that’s never been done? How much better can I show up for my family and friends? What does it look like to set a new standard as a husband, father, son, and friend?
, thank you for setting a standard and sharing it with the world. Go kick some ass at the Cocodona 250.
