Major depression and bipolar disorder continued!

In major depressive disorder, research shows decreased activity in areas of the prefrontal cortex involved in motivation, concentration, decision-making, and emotional regulation. Alterations in serotonin, dopamine, norepinephrine, glutamate, inflammation, and stress hormone signaling may contribute to symptoms such as persistent low mood, fatigue, loss of interest, impaired focus, and changes in sleep or appetite.

In bipolar disorder, the brain experiences dysregulation between mood states rather than a consistently depressed state alone. During mania or hypomania, there may be increased dopamine activity, heightened limbic system activation, disrupted sleep-wake regulation, and changes in reward-processing pathways — contributing to elevated mood, impulsivity, racing thoughts, decreased need for sleep, and increased energy. During depressive episodes, brain activity may shift into patterns similar to major depression.

Both conditions are complex medical disorders influenced by genetics, nervous system regulation, stress, inflammation, sleep, hormones, and environmental factors. Evidence-based treatment — including psychotherapy, medication management, sleep stabilization, lifestyle interventions, and social support — can help improve brain regulation and overall functioning.

Here is a great visual of what is happening in the brain in major depression and bipolar disorder.

What’s the difference between bipolar disorder and major depressive disorder?

Bipolar Disorder and Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) are often confused because both can include episodes of depression — but they are not the same condition.

Major Depressive Disorder involves periods of persistent low mood, low energy, loss of interest, hopelessness, and changes in sleep or appetite.

Bipolar Disorder includes depressive episodes plus periods of mania or hypomania, which may involve:
• Increased energy
• Reduced need for sleep
• Racing thoughts
• Impulsive behaviors
• Elevated or irritable mood

This distinction matters because treatment approaches can differ significantly. Recognizing the signs early can help individuals receive the most appropriate support and care.

Mental health conditions are medical conditions — not personality flaws or weaknesses. Education and awareness help reduce stigma and improve outcomes.🩶
