Self-Blame

Theme: “Maybe I’m the problem.”

One evening Nicole finally confronts her husband about the way he speaks to her.

The argument escalates. He calls her names, knocks something from the counter, and tells her:

“You always push me until I explode.”

Later that night, Nicole doesn’t focus on what he did.

Instead, she thinks:

Maybe I approached him at the wrong time.

Maybe my tone sounded disrespectful.

Maybe if I were more patient, he wouldn’t get this angry.

By morning, Nicole is apologizing.

He isn’t.

💭 Reflection 💭

Can Nicole acknowledge imperfections in her communication without assuming responsibility for his behavior? Who is being held accountable after these conflicts?

🗣️Key Message🗣️

You can make communication mistakes and still deserve respect. Someone else’s decision to intimidate, insult, threaten, or harm you belongs to them.

Walking on Eggshells

Theme: “If I do everything right, maybe we won’t argue.”

Nicole has learned to study her husband’s mood before saying anything important.

If he comes home irritated, she waits to discuss bills.

If the children are loud, she quickly quiets them.

If dinner isn’t ready, she immediately explains why.

Sometimes she rehearses conversations in her head before speaking because she wants to find the “right” words that won’t upset him.

Nicole believes she’s becoming a better communicator.

But increasingly, her communication is being shaped by fear of his reaction.

💭 Reflection 💭

Is Nicole communicating thoughtfully, or constantly managing another person’s emotions?

How much freedom does she have to disagree, make mistakes, or express disappointment?

❣️Key Message❣️

Healthy communication involves consideration. Walking on eggshells involves fear. They are not the same thing.

Minimizing the Abuse:

“Maybe it really isn’t that bad.”

Nicole’s husband has never seriously injured her, so she struggles to describe what happens in their home as abuse.

He calls her degrading names during arguments, punches walls, throws objects, and sometimes blocks the doorway when she tries to leave the room.

When her sister asks whether she feels safe, Nicole responds:

“He would never really hurt me.”
“He just has a temper.”
“His childhood was really difficult.”

Nicole has become very good at explaining why he behaves this way—but rarely asks herself how his behavior is affecting her.

💭 Reflection 💭
Is Nicole evaluating the relationship based on what hasn’t happened yet instead of what is already happening? Does understanding someone’s past require accepting harmful behavior?

❣️Key Message❣️
Understanding the reason behind someone’s behavior does not make the behavior healthy or acceptable. You do not have to wait for abuse to become “worse” before taking it seriously.
