Many challenging behaviors happen because a child doesn't yet have the skills to communicate their needs.
Imagine wanting something, needing help, or feeling overwhelmed—but not having a way to tell anyone.
That frustration can often lead to crying, tantrums, avoidance, or other challenging behaviors.
One of the first goals in many ABA treatment plans is teaching Functional Communication—the ability to express wants, needs, feelings, and choices.
Communication can look different for every child:
✔ Pointing
✔ Using words
✔ Using pictures (PECS)
✔ Communication devices and AAC systems
The goal is not simply talking.
The goal is helping a child be understood.
When children learn to communicate:
• "I want that."
• "I need help."
• "I'm all done."
• "I need a break."
They gain confidence, independence, and stronger connections with others.
At Cogleap, we create individualized programs based on each child's unique strengths and needs, while collaborating with families and other professionals whenever appropriate.
If you're concerned about your child's communication skills or behavior, we'd love to help.
