🚨 Drowning remains a leading cause of unintentional injury death in children—and rates have been increasing since 2020.
A recent American Academy of Pediatrics policy statement(https://tinyurl.com/mwchec7x) highlights the need for a multilayered approach to drowning prevention, while also addressing widening racial and ethnic disparities in drowning rates.

For EMS clinicians, every second counts. Prevention, rapid recognition, effective rescue, and early resuscitation are critical links in the chain of survival.

✅ Promote water safety education
✅ Encourage swimming competency and life jacket use
✅ Advocate for barriers such as four-sided pool fencing
✅ Be prepared to deliver lifesaving care when emergencies occur

The Pediatric Education for Prehospital Professionals™ (PEPP™) program recognizes the vital role EMS clinicians play in protecting children both in the community and during emergencies. Together, we can help reduce drowning injuries and deaths through education, awareness, and preparedness.

👶 MYTH: Children are just small adults.
✅ FACT: Children have unique anatomy, physiology, and emotional needs that require specialized emergency care.

In a pediatric emergency, clinicians can't simply use smaller versions of adult treatments. Children's airways, vital signs, and responses to illness or injury differ significantly from adults. Communicating with young patients and their caregivers also requires special skills.

That's why Pediatric Education for Prehospital Professionals® (PEPP®) focuses on pediatric-specific assessment and treatment, helping EMS clinicians deliver the best possible care when every second counts.

❤️ Children aren't just small adults—they're unique patients who deserve specialized care.
