We recently came together for a Beat-the-Heat Summer Bundle drive—and thanks to our collaboration with the St. Dominic Hospital Auxiliary, those donations are ready to make a difference. The Auxiliary is a dedicated group of volunteers who supports St. Dominic through service, hospitality, and funding initiatives that enhance patient care. From hydration and hygiene essentials to first aid and comfort items, hundreds of supplies were collected including more than 400 bottles of water, personal care items, and everyday necessities for those in our community experiencing homelessness. Every item tells a story of care. ❤️ See how you can join the Auxiliary: https://www.fmolhs.org/giving/volunteer/volunteer-in-greater-jackson

Some careers begin with a job. Others begin with childhood memories.

Kyle Gilmore grew up visiting his dad at FMOL Health | St. Dominic, fascinated by everything happening behind the scenes. Years later, he's now a surgical nurse working in the same hospital where his father has served for nearly three decades.

FMOL Health | St. Dominic is proud to recognize Thomas Pennell, RN, Cardiovascular ICU, as our most recent DAISY Award recipient. The DAISY Award is an international program that celebrates nurses who provide exceptional, compassionate care — and Thomas exemplifies that standard in every way.

Thomas was nominated by a grateful family member who experienced his extraordinary presence during one of life’s most difficult moments when her father was admitted for a devastating diagnosis.

“As a nursing student, I often find comfort in understanding the why behind patient care,” the nominator said. “Thomas recognized that in me immediately. He took the time to explain my father’s condition in a way that was clear, honest, and compassionate — never overwhelming but never minimizing the seriousness of the situation. He struck a balance that I didn’t even know was possible: helping me understand the gravity of my father’s condition while still protecting me as a daughter in that moment. Thomas became more than just my father’s nurse. He became a steady, reassuring presence for our entire family. He treated my father with dignity and kindness, and he treated us as if we mattered just as much.”

Although her father’s outcome was not what the family had hoped for, she shared that Thomas’s compassion shaped her own calling as a future nurse. “In a moment where everything felt out of control, Thomas gave me something to hold onto: compassion, presence, and genuine human connection,” she said. “I strive to become the kind of nurse that Thomas Pennell is — clinically skilled, deeply compassionate, and unwaveringly present.”

Thomas’s dedication, empathy, and professionalism reflect the very heart of our mission. Please join us in thanking Thomas for the extraordinary care he provides to patients and families every day.

Congratulations to Mingo Thames, Graphic Designer, who was named the most recent FMOL Health | St. Dominic Franciscan Service Award recipient. The Franciscan Service Award is the highest honor a team member can receive across our health system for those who go above and beyond to exemplify the values of our organization and to extend the healing ministry of Jesus Christ.

For more than 15 years, Mingo has brought exceptional talent, humility, and heart to his work. He understands that in a mission centered healthcare ministry, design is not simply decoration — it is an expression of dignity, clarity, and love. Angelia Sona, Provider Network Coordinator and former MarComm team member, shared, “Mingo demonstrates a true passion for our ministry’s mission and for the importance of caring for the whole person. He is the quiet heart of our team.”

A gifted and thoughtful designer, Mingo elevates every project he touches, including the beautiful historical mural he created on the hospital’s lower level. MarComm Strategist Trevis Badeaux describes him as someone who brings positivity and a can-do spirit to every challenge: “He is the soothing, calming voice of wisdom in many conversations… a moral and professional compass who helps everyone find the most effective, compassionate way forward.”

Mingo’s commitment to service extends well beyond our walls. Through his church, he helped expand a soup kitchen ministry to reach elderly and underserved neighbors in rural communities. As a devoted father, he took advantage of the opportunity to teach his children the art and joy of service, having them join him on the soup kitchen serving lines.

Please join us in thanking Mingo for his extraordinary dedication and compassion. We are grateful to have him as part of our ministry family.

Recently, FMOL Health | St. Dominic proudly joined the American Cancer Society’s Taste of Hope, supporting a powerful mission to end cancer as we know it.

Taste of Hope brings together chefs, community leaders, and supporters for an evening dedicated to raising critical funds and awareness for cancer research, advocacy, and patient support programs.

We were honored to have Dr. Eric Balfour and his wife, Linda represent St. Dominic at this meaningful event, standing alongside others committed to caring for individuals and families impacted by cancer.

Our mission guides us in providing compassionate care—and partnering with organizations like the American Cancer Society allows us to extend that care beyond clinical settings and into the community.
