Some stories leave all of us asking whether there were opportunities to better support patients and families.

The recent discussions surrounding the Massachusetts postpartum case have renewed conversations about postpartum depression, postpartum psychosis, medication safety, and access to personalized care.

Pharmacogenomic (PGx) testing is not a diagnostic test for postpartum depression or postpartum psychosis, nor can it predict or prevent these conditions. It also cannot tell us whether a different outcome would have occurred in any individual case.

What it can do is provide additional information about how a person’s genetics may influence their response to certain medications. For some patients, this information may help clinicians select medications with a lower likelihood of adverse effects or treatment failure, reducing some of the uncertainty associated with trial-and-error prescribing.

Women experiencing postpartum mental health conditions deserve comprehensive, evidence-based care. As precision medicine continues to evolve, we should continue exploring every clinically appropriate tool that can help personalize treatment and improve outcomes.

If you or someone you love is struggling with postpartum depression or experiencing thoughts of harming themselves or others, seek immediate medical attention or contact emergency services. Early intervention can save lives.

Unlocking the power of your DNA! 🧬✨

Did you know a simple genetic test can help prevent serious medication reactions? I’m Dr. Melissa Smith, your PGx Pharmacist, and it’s vital for patients to understand this before starting certain medications.

If you’re prescribed carbamazepine or phenytoin for seizures or mood stabilization, your genetics play a crucial role. Two genes—HLA-A and HLA-B—can indicate if you’re at a higher risk for Stevens-Johnson Syndrome (SJS) or Toxic Epidermal Necrolysis (TEN), conditions that can turn into medical emergencies.

The great news? This risk can be assessed with a straightforward genetic test *before* you take the medication!

Pharmacogenomic testing isn’t just about choosing the right medication; it’s about ensuring the safest options based on your unique DNA.

Let’s make medication therapy safer and more personalized together! Follow for more insights on precision medicine, and don’t forget to ask your healthcare provider about pharmacogenomic testing for your next prescription.

There are certain purchases that actually make it easier to stick to your health goals… and this might be one of them.

I finally joined the Ninja Creami club, and after using it for the first time, I completely understand why everyone loves it. As someone who’s working on prioritizing protein and finding creative ways to hit my daily goals, this has already become one of my favorite additions to my routine.

Instead of feeling like I’m eating the same high-protein foods every day, I can turn simple ingredients into a dessert that actually supports my goals. Healthy habits don’t have to feel restrictive—they can be something you genuinely look forward to.

If you’ve been thinking about getting one, Amazon Prime is currently running a deal on the exact Ninja Creami I’m using. I’ll link it so you can check it out while it’s on sale.

Most people think serotonin syndrome only happens from taking “too much medication.”

The truth? It can happen from the combination of prescription medications, supplements, and even your genetics.

If you’re taking an SSRI or SNRI and adding supplements like St. John’s wort, saffron, or ashwagandha, your risk may be different than someone else’s. Your body’s ability to process medications is influenced by your pharmacogenomics (PGx), which can affect how quickly medications are metabolized and how they interact.

Symptoms like:
• Agitation or restlessness
• Rapid heart rate
• Excessive sweating
• Tremors or muscle twitching
• Confusion
• Diarrhea
• Fever

…should never be ignored, especially after starting or combining new medications or supplements.

As a PGx Pharmacist, I believe the goal isn’t to scare you away from treatment—it’s to help you understand how your genetics, medications, and supplements work together so you can make informed decisions with your healthcare provider.

Knowledge is one of the most powerful tools for preventing avoidable adverse drug reactions.

Share this with someone who takes medication and supplements. They may not realize the combination matters.
