🎥 Action News Jax Health Alert | Head, Neck & Oral Cancer Awareness

Dr. Ackerman recently joined Action News Jax to discuss head, neck, and oral cancers, what they are, who is at risk, and the early warning signs people often overlook.

These cancers can develop in the mouth, throat, voice box, and surrounding areas, and early symptoms are often subtle. Signs like a persistent sore throat, difficulty swallowing, a lump in the neck, or mouth sores that do not heal should never be ignored.

🔥With wildfires currently impacting our community, Dr. Ackerman also addressed concerns about smoke exposure and its potential long term health effects. Prolonged exposure, especially for first responders and those in affected areas, may increase irritation and inflammation in the airways, which is why protecting your health and seeking evaluation for ongoing symptoms is important.

Early detection can significantly improve outcomes. If you have symptoms, risk factors, or questions about screening, our team is here to help.

☢️Ever wondered how the radioactive sources used in cancer treatment are replaced?

This video shows a source exchange for a high-dose-rate brachytherapy system. Inside the machine is a tiny radioactive source made of Iridium-192, which is used to deliver very targeted radiation treatments for certain cancers.

Because Iridium-192 has a 74-day half-life, it gradually loses strength as it decays. To maintain the correct treatment dose and keep treatment times short, the source has to be replaced multiple times each year.

The new source arrives inside a heavily shielded transport container, is carefully transferred into the system, and then the machine undergoes radiation measurements, calibration, and safety verification before returning to clinical use.

A small source with a huge role in modern radiation therapy.

✨Employee Spotlight: Ceilidgh O’Brien

On April 20th, 2026, Ceilidgh will be running the Boston Marathon in support of the Boston Bruins Foundation, raising funds for programs that support education, health, wellness, and community initiatives.

For Ceilidgh, this race is deeply personal. When she was just 11 months old, she was diagnosed with Stage 3 thoracic neuroblastoma. After undergoing eight rounds of chemotherapy and surgery, she went into remission in 2005.

Growing up, Ceilidgh and her family participated in annual cancer walks through “Ceilidgh’s Crusaders,” raising money for cancer research and supporting families facing similar challenges. Those experiences helped shape her appreciation for resilience, community, and the ability to keep moving forward.

Now she is taking on the Boston Marathon as a way to give back and support others through the work of the Boston Bruins Foundation.

💛 If you would like to support Ceilidgh and her Boston Marathon journey, please donate here: https://www.givengain.com/project/ceilidgh-raising-funds-for-boston-bruins-foundation-113785?utm_source=ig&utm_medium=social&utm_content=link_in_bio

🌟Staff Spotlight: Brittany Rodriguez

We’re proud to highlight Brittany, one of our Medical Assistants, who recently went above and beyond to support the Jacksonville community by volunteering her time to help organize a fundraiser benefiting WeCareJax.

Alongside her team, Peek-A-Boo, Brittany helped bring together a fun community raffle with themed baskets, including the crowd favorite “Smoothie Kween” healthy living basket donated by Ackerman Cancer Center.

We are grateful to have team members like Brittany who are passionate about caring for others both inside and outside of the clinic.

❤️Thank you for making a difference in our Jacksonville community!
