A break is not always a reward.

Sometimes it is an accommodation.

Under I.D.E.A. (34 CFR 300.324(a)(2)(i)), if a student's behavior impedes learning, the IEP team is required to consider positive behavioral interventions and supports, not just consequences.

That can look like scheduled movement breaks, sensory breaks, or built in regulation time written directly into the IEP or behavior plan.

A written accommodation is a need to be met. It is not a privilege a student has to earn first.

If you are unsure whether a break should be written in as a support for a specific student, bring it to your special education coordinator, coach, mentor, or director.

Do I step in? Or do I give them room to experience what they're capable of? This can feel like such a tough call to make.

Before you step in, ask:

'What am I protecting them from? Is it something dangerous? Or something growthful/ important/ brave?'

'Am I showing them I believe in them? Or their anxiety?'

'Am I holding them back from danger? Or growth?'

Step in when they need safety, advocacy, regulation, scaffolding for a skill they don't have yet, or when their bodies don't feel okay.

Step back when we're about to take over something they could actually carry with enough support.

Stepping back doesn't mean leaving them alone. it might sound like:

'I'm right here.'
'I know this is tough and I know you can handle this. We'll do this together.'
'I'll help with the first part.'
'You have a go. I'll stay close.'

Brave grows in the space between doing it alone and having it done for them.

Sometimes our children need more of us. Sometimes they need more room - with us nearby.❤

We spent today shampooing and steam cleaning the carpets and upholstery throughout the clinic. We care about those we serve AND those we work alongside! We’ve had a lot of wet weather lately and we needed a deeper clean. Having a truly clean, not just clean looking, environment is another opportunity to make sure our walk matches our talk.
