Hot off the press! ๐Ÿ—ž๏ธ

We are thrilled to share that our treatment outcomes have been published in a peer-reviewed journal!

A few highlights:
๐Ÿง  Neurobehavioral Symptom Inventory total score decreased by an average of 15.6 points (41%) by the end of the three-week program
๐Ÿ’ญ Scores on Addenbrooke's Cognitive Examination-III improved by 6.8 points
๐Ÿšถโ€โ™‚๏ธ Gait speed and vestibular measures showed significant improvements
โšก The proportion of patients screening at or above a commonly used PTSD threshold on the PCL-5 declined from 51% at intake to 20% at discharge
๐Ÿšฆ Higher baseline PTSD symptom scores were associated with higher neurobehavioral symptom scores across time points

Ultimately, our findings were consistent with multidomain benefits of intensive, interdisciplinary neuropsychiatric rehabilitation in the mild/moderate TBI population. We're excited to continue this work as part of the VICTORY clinical trial!

We are excited to highlight another of our stellar team members!

Neal Covas, PT, DPT, NCS AVPT, has been part of the UF Health Haley Brain Wellness Program team since the beginning! As the Lead Physical Therapist and Clinical Specialist, he works with one-on-one with participants to develop an individualized plan for their TBI symptoms. From balance and mobility to strength and pain management, our physical therapists know the tests and treatment strategies that work best (using some pretty neat technology!). Neal holds a doctorate of physical therapy and is specialized in neurological and vestibular rehabilitation. Outside of work, Neal enjoys running and backpacking sections of the Appalachian Trail!

What Neal enjoys most about working at the HBWP is interacting with the veteran population with mTBI. In his words, "after the sacrifices that have been made for our country, I want to help our veterans to return to doing things within their communities without compensating or quietly suffering due to the symptoms of their traumatic brain injury."

Join us in celebrating Neal! ๐Ÿง ๐Ÿƒ

Mental health challenges can affect anyone. No matter what your story looks like, you don't have to bear your burdens alone.

Caring for others means caring for their mental and physical health. This is why our team provides compassionate, individualized care to treat the emotional and mental challenges that often accompany a head injury. Did you know that a concussion or TBI can affect your senses?

After a brain injury, some individuals experience noise sensitivity, sometimes called phonophobia. Everyday sounds โ€” like crowded restaurants, traffic, alarms, or multiple conversations at once โ€” may suddenly feel overwhelming or exhausting.

Noise sensitivity can be a real neurological symptom, not simply irritation or distraction. Targeted rehabilitation can help the brain better tolerate sound over time.

Motorcycle crashes are a major cause of traumatic brain injuries. Wearing a helmet is one of the most effective ways to reduce the risk of TBI in the event of a crash. DOT-certified helmets meet minimum safety standards, but for greater protection, look for helmets with Snell or ECE 22.06 certification โ€” these meet more rigorous testing requirements.

๐Ÿ๏ธ Riders: Always wear a helmet and protective gear, and stay alert.
๐Ÿš˜ Drivers: Look twice before turning or changing lanes โ€” motorcycles can be harder to spot than cars.

When a veteran or first responder graduates from our three-week Intensive Outpatient Program, they have completed about 90 hours of specialized therapies targeting their unique symptoms of brain injury โ€“ from headache and sleep troubles, to balance and emotional regulation challenges. And they don't do it alone โ€“ these participants put in the work together as a cohort.

We are over the moon to celebrate surpassing 250 program graduates, and we look forward to many graduations to come!

May is Month of the Military Caregiver, a time to recognize the loved ones who provide support to our nationโ€™s service members and veterans. Caregivers offer not only practical assistance, but also emotional strength, advocacy, and compassion โ€” all while balancing their own personal and professional lives.

At the Haley Brain Wellness Program, we are honored to come alongside these hidden heroes in providing person-centered care to veterans and first responders who have experienced a traumatic brain injury.

After a concussion or traumatic brain injury (TBI), some people notice itโ€™s harder to find the right word โ€” even when they know exactly what they want to say.

This can happen because brain networks involved in language, attention, and processing speed arenโ€™t communicating as efficiently. This can lead to pauses in conversation or feeling like a word is โ€œon the tip of your tongue.โ€

The good news: with targeted strategies and practice, communication can improve over time.

This May, we're taking a moment to take highlight the contributions of our amazing speech-language pathologists by recognizing National Speech-Language-Hearing month.

Recovering from brain injury is challenging, and can be even harder for those facing difficulties with understanding and being understood by others. Through evidence-based approaches tailored to the individual patient, our SLPs contribute to whole-person healing after TBI by targeting specific goals in the domains of speech, cognition, and interpersonal communication.
