First, Save this video and send it to your partner to prepare together.
• Step 1: “What do we want birth to actually feel like?”
○ calm and quiet?
○ lots of encouragement?
○ lights dimmed, music playing, minimal interruptions?
○ most couples never talk about the atmosphere until labor already starts
• Step 2: “How do we handle pain management?”
○ open to epidural? trying unmedicated first?
○ nitrous oxide? movement? laboring at home as long as possible?
○ not making a rigid plan, but understanding each other beforehand
• Step 3: “What happens if plans change?”
○ induction? Pitocin? C-section? assisted delivery?
○ who asks questions? who helps slow things down?
○ because decisions are harder during contractions
• Step 4: “Who is updating family and answering phones?”
○ because trust me, someone WILL text “any baby yet??” during labor
○ decide now if you want privacy or constant updates
○ one person handling communication = much less stress
• Step 5: “What will postpartum realistically look like?”
○ who gets up at night?
○ who handles meals, laundry, groceries?
○ “we’ll figure it out later” becomes overwhelming very fast
• Step 6: “What are our boundaries?”
○ visitors at the hospital?
○ kissing the baby?
○ family showing up unannounced postpartum?
○ boundaries are easier to set BEFORE emotions are high
• Step 7: “What support do we want during birth?”
○ because your partner should not have to figure everything out alone
○ labor support is a skill
○ this is exactly why many couples choose a doula:
→ guidance
→ hands-on support
→ advocacy
→ help staying calm and informed when things get intense
Most couples spend more time planning the nursery, than planning how they’ll actually work together during birth and postpartum.
