Cemetery Etiquette. A cemetery is a unique place. While it is part of the everyday scene, it is not part of everyday life. That is to say, it is a place where tranquility and quiet are the desired norm, and activities of everyday life should be suspended. Drive slowly, follow the roadways and don't drive on the grass. Walk in between the headstones, and don’t stand on top of a burial place. Mitchell Cemetery, like most cemeteries, is opened from dawn to dusk. Entry after dark can be considered trespassing. Cemetery trespassing laws classify unauthorized entry as a misdemeanor and theft or property damage or desecration can escalate to a felony. When you bring your pets, place them on a leash, be sure to clean up after them. If you bring flowers or other items to leave at a grave-site, take any wrappers or containers with you when you leave to avoid littering. By observing these guidelines, you’re helping to honor the memory of those laid to rest and showing respect for the families who visit.

I've been told these are wild petunias. They are all over part of the cemetery. Man placed his flowers weeks ago for Memorial Day and now it's God's turn. Regarding flowers "Not even Solomon in all his splendor was dressed like one of these." This child's marker is from 1882, up to 30% of all children did not live long enough to see their first birthday who were born in 1882.

I had a fine visit with three members of the Burege family from Garden City, Missouri near Harrisonville who came to visit their deceased relatives today. Always good to hear those stories.

Another Killdeer bird has laid a couple eggs at the cemetery. She's very protective. Landscape timbers have been placed around the nest to protect the area. The Killdeer are numerous at Mitchell.

The flowers placed around markers in the ground were removed yesterday after 3 weeks since Memorial Day so that lawn mowing and trimming can continue with less difficulty. Flowers in the vases with the stones still remain. The flowers removed will be placed next year on markers in the oldest part of the cemetery where people were mainly buried in the 1800's and few still have flowers placed at their markers yearly. Eventually we want every marker to have a flower for Memorial Day.
