Today we are commemorating the 25th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks. In the aftermath, community members stepped up to help however they could. Blood donors turned out in record numbers around the country.

But every day, thousands of people need lifesaving blood transfusions because of cancer treatments, childbirth complications, surgeries, traumatic injuries, and other medical emergencies.

LifeServe Blood Center in Johnston welcomed a very special guest last week for a full tour of our operations. Andrew, an inquisitive and charming 7-year-old boy, has Idiopathic Aplastic Anemia, a rare but serious blood disorder where his bone marrow does not produce enough blood cells. He receives platelets every week at Blank Children's Hospital, and sometimes red blood cell transfusions as well.

As Andrew went through treatments and transfusions, he started asking questions about the blood that he was receiving, where it comes from, and how it gets from a blood donor to his body.

So LifeServe brought in Andrew and his family for a full VIP tour of our donor center, lab, fleet, and more. He spent an hour learning all about blood, met a platelet blood donor with his same blood type, walked away with some free gifts, and more. Staff rolled out the red carpet and showed him all steps of the process, led by LifeServe CEO Stacy Sime, Medical Director Dr. Alex Smith, and many LifeServe team members.

Andrew is a great reminder that behind all of the volunteer blood donors, and the many staff and steps that lead to that blood reaching a patient in need, ultimately this is about real people, real patients who need lifesaving blood to survive. Thank you to Andrew and his family for reaching out and spending time with us.
