Delta Heartmind Collective

Delta Heartmind Collective Delta Heartmind Collective is a space for all those interested in "internal" movement arts and philosophies, primarily located in Jonesboro, AR.

A gathering of Mid-south practitioners of various holistic arts that develop the "Heart-Mind": the integration of emotions, mind, and body that creates a state of health, peace, and resiliency for whatever life brings! By "internal," we mean practices that integrate mind, body, and emotions by working from the inside out - cultivating the body's internal energies through relaxing the body, deepeni

ng the breath, observing the mind and emotions, and focusing one's intention in the present moment. Internal philosophies are commonly associated with Eastern traditions such as Taoism and Buddhism, but are found in many spiritual traditions across the world as well as modern secular well-being programs. Since it can be hard to find others here in Midsouth who have experience and training in these practices, Delta Heartmind Collective is a page for sharing announcements of meetings, workshops, or local complimentary holistic practitioners, groups and services. Our focus is on creating a safe and supporting community free from competitive "lineage bashing" or proselytizing. Information is shared for educational purposes only and is not intended as medical advise, diagnosis or treatment.

Some great stuff from the University of Virginia's Health Center. University of Virginia has been a leader in promoting Mindfulness in medicine and health settings. Their Contemplative Sciences Center was one of my introductions to Mindfulness from an academic perspective, and they have developed a lot of great resources - check out the link in the comments.

This is a great post explaining what is meant by "making space" in the body and mind - one of the most important things you can do in times of high stress - and has some great direction on a simple but effective standing Qigong process.

But in the simplest form, this process starts with being aware of when you are unconsciously falling into locked, defensive or "covering" postures - clenching in the body, shallow breathing, slumping the shoulders or trying to "curl up". Check in with yourself frequently and examine your posture - release the tension, adjust your spine (whether standing or sitting), take deep, natural breaths, and "sink" your energy into your roots. Expand outward with the outgoing breath, letting go of that "braced for impact' feeling, and breathing in, bring the new energy into the dan tien (energy center around the body's center of mass about two inches below your navel). Make the time and space for it in your day, and you'll find greater resources in dealing for whatever's coming your way!

Learning how to make space in your physical body is an excellent tool for reversing the cycle of compounding tension, so you can relax, empty your mind and become present to the here and now — where all healing takes place and the creative force thrives.

Spring is on the way! While we're not totally out of winter yet, it's a good time to start preparing for a new season and enjoying the change of energy:

Acupuncture during spring focuses on encouraging circulation, easing stagnation, and supporting the Liver system. It can also support digestion and detoxification pathways and reduce inflammation and tension. This helps you feel more flexible, energized, and grounded as the season unfolds. By listen...

As we get into the cold months, it's time to conserve energy and cultivate a calm, stable mindset to preserve qi and guard against the depletion that can happen from physical cold & damp weather and the mental anxiety/over-stimulation that can accompany the holidays and new year planning. Rather than overloading on too many quick "resolutions", it's a good day to sit, breathe deeply, and ask yourself what is the core intention that you want to cultivate for next year's growth. Let everything settle, and really listen for the heartmind's guidance on what is most needed. Go for the hearth fire, rather than the fireworks, and create a focused, positive statement you can come back to as needed through the year.

This is a good overview of the winter challenges, and some ways to get the most out of the season:

Restorative energy of winter, nourishing yin energy, storing away for spring, a time of reflection and conservation

Fall and Winter Foods

According to Chinese Medicine, our diet should change with the seasons to keep us in tune with the energies around us. As the weather cools off for the fall, it makes sense that we should eat more warming, strengthening foods.

Using warming spices is an easy way to enhance the diet and warm the body during the colder weather. Onions, scallion, garlic and ginger help circulate qi and blood. Fenugreek, fennel, cumin, white and black pepper, cinnamon, clove and nutmeg can be used to increase the digestive fire.

Root vegetables are great fall foods because their qi moves downward, deep into the earth, which makes them nourishing for the Earth energy (Spleen and Stomach). Turnips, rutabagas, beets, carrots, burdock, daikon and parsnip are all excellent in soup or when cut into small pieces and baked with a small amount of olive oil.

Winter squashes like butternut, acorn, pumpkin and spaghetti squash are easy to prepare and can be used to create many different dishes. They can be steamed, baked, or stir fried. Try steamed squash dressed with olive oil, tamari, ginger and pumpkin seeds. Or baked butternut squash with a little shredded coconut and cinnamon.

Although we want to avoid excessive amounts of raw foods during the colder months, small amounts of bitter, spicy salad greens like arugula, escarole, dandelion greens or radicchio can be a welcome addition to the diet. Watercress is a traditional winter favorite with a tangy, peppery flavor. It is packed with vitamins and minerals, making it the perfect ingredient to help prevent seasonal colds.

Ask your practitioner for specific recommendations based on your Chinese Medicine diagnosis.
