Let’s talk fascia!

Addressing the fascia first is crucial! It’s the outer layer surrounding and affecting all underlying structures. Restricted fascia can limit mobility and prevent effective muscle work. Gentle pressure releases these restrictions, allowing muscles to relax and respond better. This approach makes bodywork more effective and prevents discomfort for a more lasting release.

Even before you ride don’t skip the curry comb! You think you are just breaking up hair and dirt but currying your horse can help loosen fascia by creating gentle, rhythmic stimulation across the skin and underlying connective tissue. The circular motion of a curry comb lifts the skin slightly and encourages movement between the layers of fascia, helping to reduce minor restrictions and improve tissue elasticity. This action also increases blood flow and stimulates the lymphatic system, which supports hydration and overall tissue health—both essential for supple fascia. It’s a great tool to use as the first step of your warm up!

A horse carries 58% of their body weight over their front legs supported by muscles, tendons and ligaments. The horse’s thoracic sling is a group of muscles that suspend the ribcage between the front legs, since horses don’t have a collarbone. Key muscles include the serratus ventralis, pectorals, and trapezius, which support the forehand and absorb shock during movement. Keeping a horse’s thoracic sling strong and supple is important because it supports good posture, balance, and shock absorption—helping prevent strain, improve movement, and reduce the risk of injury, especially in performance horses.
