We are incredibly honored to share that Cove Child Development has been named a 2026 BBB Torch Awards for Ethics WINNER!

We submitted our team’s training handbook, our mission/values, parent feedback, reviews from therapists who previously worked with us, and real-life examples of decisions we’ve made that reflect our commitment to ethical care.

🤍 Recommending fewer therapy sessions or discharge when clinically appropriate.

🤍 Supporting single parents and military spouses, and continuing to provide therapy during the government shutdown, even when we weren’t receiving reimbursement for our services.

🤍 Advocating for insurance coverage and helping families navigate denials rather than simply passing the financial responsibility on to them right away.

🤍 Creating a workplace where therapists feel supported, valued, and empowered to advocate for their patients based on past therapist’s reviews

🤍 Welcoming parents into therapy sessions and prioritizing education and collaboration because we believe families deserve to be active participants in their child’s care.

We are far from perfect, and we are constantly learning and growing. But we are intentional about the kind of business we are building and the values we want reflected in every decision we make.

🌊 Meet Sydney, one of our newest Occupational Therapists at Cove! 💛

Originally from Greenville, South Carolina, Sydney earned her bachelor’s degree in Neuroscience from the University of Tennessee (Go Vols! 🧡) before completing her Doctorate in Occupational Therapy at the Medical University of South Carolina.

Sydney loves helping kids build confidence and independence through play and has experience supporting sensory regulation, executive functioning, and developmental skills. She believes the best therapy happens when children feel safe, connected, and excited to participate. 🫧🎨🛝

Sydney recently moved to Oʻahu and we’re so excited to have her growing, learning, and bringing her creativity to the Cove ʻohana! 🌺

Outside the clinic, you’ll find her watercoloring, reading with her cat nearby, thrifting, at the beach, or searching for her new favorite local food spot. ☀️📚

🌧️ Helping Your Child Feel Calm During a Storm ⛈️
From an OT perspective 💛

Storms can bring loud noises, changes in routine, power outages, and lots of uncertainty — which can be especially overwhelming for little nervous systems.

Here are a few OT-approved ways to help your child feel safe + regulated:

🏕️ Create a cozy safe space
Blankets, pillows, stuffed animals, or even a little fort can help reduce sensory input and create a sense of security.

🤍 Offer deep pressure
Big hugs, pillow squeezes, a weighted lap pad, or snuggling under a favorite blanket can be calming for many kids.

💪 Get in some heavy work
Animal walks, wall pushes, carrying pillows, pushing a laundry basket, or helping gather storm supplies can provide regulating proprioceptive input.

🎧 Reduce the noise
Headphones, earmuffs, calming music, or a familiar movie can help soften the unpredictable sounds of wind and rain.

🔦 Give them a special job
Let them be in charge of the flashlight, gather favorite toys, organize snacks, or pick out books. A little control can feel really reassuring when everything else feels unpredictable.

🧸 Bring out familiar comfort items
Favorite stuffed animals, fidgets, play dough, coloring, crunchy snacks, or whatever sensory tools your child already loves.

🗓️ Keep routines familiar
Even if the power goes out or everyone is sleeping in a different room, keeping meals, pajamas, stories, and bedtime somewhat predictable can help.

🫶 Focus on co-regulation
Sometimes the best sensory strategy is simply you. Stay close, use a calm voice, cuddle if they want it, and remind them that they’re safe with you.

And remember: not every sensory strategy works for every child. Follow their cues and stick with what helps their body feel safe and regulated. 💛
