When we teach self-defense or first aid, we train students to build the mental habit of identifying entrances, exits, hazards, threats, and available resources.

In self-defense, those resources might be witnesses, objects you can use to defend yourself, or an escape route. In first aid, they might be an AED, materials to control bleeding, or bystanders you can assign specific roles.

This habit of awareness can keep you a step ahead when others would react with panic.

No email is so urgent that you don’t have time to verify the sender. Social engineering and phishing prey on panic or excitement.
