Teaching relevant life skills enhances agency, creativity, and confidence. It can also limit stressful and anxious responses when exposed to new challenges.

After two years of wobbly seats and mis-matched lids, I gave the kids an “independence challenge” to replace the three toilet seats in the house. They had to figure out how to take off the old ones, which totally grossed them out, and head to Home Depot. When they arrived, they discovered there were different sizes, shapes, and colors. Luckily, they had taken the old toilet lids into the store with them! 😂 They asked an associate for advice and decided to spend a little more on “slam-proof” versions.

My 12-year-old read the instructions and installed the new ones, and when he dropped a bolt into the toilet, he was sure to make loud gagging noises for all to hear. It took him most of the evening, but they’re all shiny and new!

You’ll hear me say this over and over on this page: One of the best ways to naturally limit screen time for our kids is to actively engage them in the real world. There are hours and hours of life lessons to learn and dozens of valuable skills to develop in situations that pop up in everyday life.

It’s our job to be intentional to encourage them to take them on.

Can we talk about how...

1. ...having mixed babies doesn't absolve you from the work of being actively anti-racist...?

2. ...part of belonging to a socially dominant group, in this case White or Euro-American, means that you're more likely to experience a sense of entitlement?

3. ... a lot of YT people would rather talk about how they "can't" use the n word than how Black folks die sooner because of accumulated stress and trauma from harmful policies and practices rooted in racial exclusion

*takes typing break*

4. ... a heap of YT folks feel like they should be able to do anything they want. It's the same energy behind refusing to create better gun legislation and voter suppression laws.

5. ... you can't claim Blackness (or other racial identities) when it benefits you. The will to do so is also rooted in White entitlement.

What do y'all think??

The Karen who was filmed calling a Black barista the N-word has a well-documented history of racist, anti-mask harassment.
