The Senate H.E.L.P. Committee — where Senator Murray is a senior member — favorably reported the Living Donor Protection Act (LDPA) out to the full Senate on Thursday, Feb. 26! This is the final step before a full Senate vote, and Senator Murray's voice matters here.
Living donors could dramatically shorten transplant wait times and give patients their best chance for long-term success. But up to one in four living donors face insurance discrimination, and many struggle to get time off work for donation and recovery. These barriers discourage people from saving lives when every day counts.
The Living Donor Protection Act (S. 1552) has bipartisan sponsors, backing from both parties, and even support from the insurance industry itself. The Congressional Budget Office says it costs taxpayers nothing. It would:
Protect Insurance Access — Prohibit companies from denying, canceling, limiting coverage, or charging higher premiums for life, disability, and long-term care insurance based solely on donor status.
Protect Jobs — Guarantee FMLA protections specifically for living organ donors, so they can take unpaid leave for surgery and recovery without losing their job.
Improve Public Education — Require updated HHS materials on living donation benefits, risks, and legal protections for donors.
