One of my personal projects…completing the application for a Canadian Citizenship Certificate! Thanks to a law change late last year, if you are descended from a Canadian citizen you are considered a citizen by descent. The challenge is proving it! I’m fortunate to have a fairly straight-forward situation, with my great-grandfather being my anchor ancestor and his birth registry is readily available on Ancestry. BUT - the paperwork! As with any government process, you have to get things *just right* or risk the application being returned. I’m hoping to have my packet done and ready to mail by July 1st 🤞🏼

Busy time with family things the last few weeks - thank goodness for Legacy Family Tree Webinars to keep my mind entertained while I’m multitasking on projects or cleaning or whatever! This one, “Your Family Tree, Everywhere: Mac and iOS Genealogy Solutions” by Linda Yip was just what I needed. I’m excited to get back to my computer and try out some things she talked about. Looking back to see how far I’ve come…

This FB memory popped up a little while ago, and I can’t help but laugh. Not just because I now know the answer to this challenging ancestor (surprise! It was in the actual pension a-privation records which have since been digitized!)

But especially because Itty Bitty Baby Genealogist Cassidy had NO idea how to research. She didn’t know what kind of records were out there, or where to find them. She didn’t have any kind of connection with other genealogists who she could ask for advice. And she most certainly didn’t have the research and analysis skills needed to resolve the conflicting evidence she was dealing with.

So tell me, what suggestions would you give a beginning researcher looking for records on a Confederate soldier? Especially when they tell you that there wasn’t a soldier by that name in the company that was listed in his obituary/headstone? (Note: I’ve already found the answer, which is why I’m not giving specifics about the ancestor. I’m curious what kind of research suggestions/advice other genealogists might give.)
