Getting feet ready for summer involves a 10–15 minute daily soak, consistent moisturizing (especially on heels), using a pumice stone for exfoliation, and trimming nails straight across. Protect feet with SPF 25+, wear supportive footwear, and address calluses or dryness early to ensure comfort and health.
Essential Summer Foot Care Tips
Exfoliation & Moisturizing: Use a pumice stone or foot file to remove hard skin, then apply a rich moisturizer to prevent dry, cracked heels.
Sun Protection: Apply sunscreen to the tops and soles of feet to avoid painful sunburns.
Toenail Care: Trim nails straight across and use a nail file to soften sharp edges, which helps prevent ingrown toenails.
Footwear Support: Avoid wearing flip-flops or unsupportive sandals for long periods to reduce foot strain.
Hygiene & Protection: Wear sandals in public showers or pool areas to prevent fungal infections.
Hydration: Drink plenty of water to minimize swelling.

Osteoarthritis (OA) in the feet is a degenerative "wear and tear" condition causing localized, asymmetrical pain, usually worse with activity. Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA) is an inflammatory autoimmune disease causing symmetrical pain (both feet), prolonged morning stiffness (>1 hour), swelling, and warmth, often affecting the toes and ball of the foot.
Key Differences in Foot Symptoms:
Symmetry and Location: RA: Typically affects the same joints on both feet simultaneously (symmetrical), particularly the toes and metatarsophalangeal joints (ball of the foot). OA: Usually affects specific, isolated, or weight-bearing joints (e.g., big toe, ankle) and is often asymmetrical.
Stiffness Duration: RA: Morning stiffness often lasts longer than 1 hour. OA: Stiffness typically lasts less than 30 minutes.
Pain Characteristics: RA: Pain is often accompanied by swelling, warmth, and redness, which can improve with movement. OA: Pain is often sharp or aching and worsens with activity or walking.
Systemic Symptoms: RA: Can cause systemic symptoms, including fatigue, low-grade fever, and stiffness in other joints. OA: Generally localized to the affected joint, with no systemic symptoms.
Long-Term Deformities: RA: Commonly causes rapid joint destruction and deformities like claw toes. OA: Leads to bony enlargements (nodes) and cartilage degeneration over a much longer period.

Inspect your feet after winter for signs of damage caused by cold, dry air, and tight boots. Check for dry, cracked skin (especially on heels), thick calluses, and discoloration (red/purple) or numbness suggesting circulation issues. Inspect between toes for fungal infections and check for ingrown toenails to prevent infection, particularly if you have diabetes.
