Anyone have a child that struggles to wind down at night? We see the raised hands!

Bedtime struggles aren’t always about a child “not wanting to go to bed.” For some children, sensory regulation can make the transition to sleep especially difficult. Their body may still be seeking input, they may be overwhelmed from a busy day, or suddenly notice sensations that were easier to ignore earlier. Even parts of the bedtime routine, like pajamas, brushing teeth, dimming the lights, or becoming still, can bring their own sensory challenges.

Looking at what might be making bedtime hard can help us better understand what a child’s body is communicating.

FUN FACT FRIDAY!

Have you ever caught a familiar smell and suddenly been transported back to a specific place or moment?

There’s a reason for that! Your sense of smell is closely connected to areas of the brain involved in memory and emotion. That’s why a certain perfume, food, or even the smell of a season can bring back memories and feelings almost instantly.

P.S. And for people like Tami who are blessed (cursed?) with the best sense of smell ever, this holds very true!

Resilience doesn’t mean teaching kids not to be upset when something is hard. It means helping them experience disappointment, frustration, and change while learning: “I can get through this.” So how can we support kids through hard moments without minimizing their feelings?

So how can we support kids through hard moments without minimizing their feelings?

Read our latest blog for a few practical strategies to try.

In an effort to build resilience, we accidentally send a different message that can sound a lot like, "This isn’t a big deal," or "You’re fine." The intention may be to help a child recognize that they can handle something difficult. But minimizing the emotion doesn’t actually teach them how t...

Let's talk about resilience this week.

Resilience doesn’t mean “toughening up.” It doesn’t mean ignoring big feelings, pushing through overwhelm, or pretending something doesn’t hurt.

Resilience grows when we learn that things are hard AND we can get through it!

We don’t build resilience by teaching people to feel less. We build it by helping them feel safe enough to experience hard things, supported enough to work through them, and confident enough to know they can recover.

Stay tuned tomorrow as we go over some ways to help build your child's resilience!
