The Road the Ancestors Left

The old people taught
that the heart should never hurry
when the earth is speaking.

Some answers come slowly,
like rain finding dry ground,
like morning returning
after a season of grief.

We carry more than our own names.
Behind us walk the prayers
of those who endured
so we could stand here.

Their strength is not a chain.
It is a fire kept low,
warm enough to guide us,
quiet enough to let us choose.

The wind reminds us
that nothing living stays unchanged.
What bends may survive.
What listens may understand.
What loves deeply
may still remain after loss.

So leave kindness
where anger once stood.
Leave patience
where fear tried to grow.

And when you do not know
which way is home,
place your hand upon the earth
and remember:

You belong to a story
older than your sorrow,
and every gentle step
can become a path
for someone who comes after.
