You don’t have to earn the bolster.
I mean this quite literally.
Somewhere along the way, yoga props acquired a reputation as the things you reach for when you can’t quite do the pose.
Nope.
In my classes, the bolster isn’t the consolation prize. The block isn’t evidence that you aren’t flexible enough. And using three blankets, two blocks and a bolster doesn’t mean you’ve somehow chosen the “easy” version.
Props change the relationship between your body and gravity.
They give your body something to push into, lean against, drape over and—perhaps most importantly—stop holding itself up against.
And when your body feels sufficiently supported, something rather lovely can happen:
it may stop working quite so hard.
That’s a very different reason for using a bolster than “because I can’t reach.”
So take the damn bolster.
Take two.
Build yourself a small upholstered fortress if that’s what your body wants. 😂
The point was never to prove you could do without the support.
The practice might actually be learning to receive it.
