Therapy can feel a little weird at first.

Think about it…

You sit down with someone you barely know and are asked to talk about parts of your life you may not talk about with anyone.

The things that hurt.
The things you’re embarrassed about.
The thoughts you usually keep to yourself.
Sometimes even things you’ve never said out loud before.

That’s a lot of vulnerability with someone who, at first, is still a stranger.

So it makes sense if you don’t walk into your first session ready to share everything.

Therapeutic rapport takes time.

You’re getting to know your therapist while your therapist is getting to know you. Trust, comfort, and connection can develop over time.

Some people open up quickly. Others need more time. Sometimes you leave a session realizing you talked about everything except the thing you actually wanted to talk about.

That’s part of being human.

Therapy isn’t about how quickly you can tell your story. It’s about having a place where, little by little, it becomes easier to tell it. ❤️

🎒 When Back-to-School Anxiety Doesn’t Look Like Anxiety

As the first day of school gets closer, you may notice your child acting a little… different.

Maybe they’re suddenly:

• More irritable or argumentative
• Complaining that their stomach or head hurts
• Having trouble falling asleep
• Asking the same questions about school over and over
• Becoming extra clingy
• Crying or melting down over small things
• Saying they “don’t care” or don’t want to go
• Struggling more with transitions or routines

It can be easy to see these behaviors as defiance, attitude, or drama.

But sometimes, underneath the behavior is a nervous system saying:

“Something is changing, and I’m not sure what to expect.”

Back-to-school anxiety is common. New teachers, new classrooms, friendships, academic expectations, schedules, and simply leaving the comfort of summer can feel like a lot.

❤️ How can parents help?

Start bringing routines back before school starts. Earlier bedtimes, regular meals, and predictable mornings help the brain know what to expect.

Talk about school without making it the only topic. Ask simple questions like, “What are you looking forward to?” and “Is there anything you’re wondering about?”

Validate the feeling without feeding the fear:

“It makes sense to feel nervous when something is changing. We’ll figure it out together.”

And remember, our goal isn’t to eliminate every uncomfortable feeling.

It’s to help kids learn:

“I can feel nervous AND still do hard things.”

Sometimes the behavior we see on the outside is simply a child trying to manage something much bigger on the inside. 💛

🏔️ One day, our kids will decide whether they want to come back home.

Long after they forget the homework…
or the basketball scores…
or what they got for Christmas…

They’ll remember how this community made them feel.

Did they feel safe?
Did they feel accepted?
Did adults know their name?
Did someone believe in them when they were struggling?
Did they feel like they belonged here?

Those little moments add up.

Every smile.
Every encouraging word.
Every coach, teacher, neighbor, volunteer, cashier, and friend.

We’re not just raising kids.

We’re shaping what “home” feels like.

Let’s make Kodiak a place our children will always be proud to call home. 💙

🏮 It Takes a Village

There was once a village where every home lit a lantern at sunset.

No single lantern could light the entire town.

But together…

The streets felt safer.
Neighbors could find one another.
Children weren’t afraid to walk home.
No one had to sit in the dark alone.

One evening, someone asked,
“Which lantern is the most important?”

An elder smiled and replied,

“None of them… and all of them.”

Because it was never about one light.

It was about everyone choosing to bring a little light.

A kind word.
A helping hand.
A second chance.
A warm welcome.
A listening ear.

None of these change a community on their own.

But together, they create the kind of place people are proud to call home.

💙 That’s what people mean when they say, “It takes a village.”

What light can you bring to our community today?

🍎 Back-to-School Is More Than Buying School Supplies ✏️

As the new school year gets closer, many families are starting to feel the shift, even if they can’t quite put their finger on why.

For kids, it might look like:
📚 Trouble falling asleep
😠 More irritability or meltdowns
😟 Worry about new teachers, friends, or routines
🥺 Extra clinginess or emotional ups and downs

For parents, it can feel like:
☕ Juggling schedules
💭 Wondering if your child is “ready”
😅 Feeling stretched between work, activities, and home
❤️ Wanting to make everything go smoothly

The transition back to school is a big adjustment for everyone. A little extra patience can go a long way.

Here are a few ways to make the change a little easier:
✅ Start moving bedtime and wake up times earlier.
✅ Ease back into daily routines before the first day.
✅ Talk about both the exciting and the challenging parts of returning to school.
✅ Remember that behavior is often communication especially during times of change.

Most importantly, give yourself grace. You don’t have to have everything figured out before the first school bell rings.

Here’s to a new year of learning, growth, and fresh starts. 💙

👀 Children are always watching.

Not just what we say…

But how we treat people.

💙 They notice who we include.

👋 They notice if we wave first.

🤝 They notice how we disagree.

❤️ They notice when we apologize.

🌱 They notice when we choose kindness… even when it’s hard.

Long before children learn these lessons in school…

They’re learning them from us.

Every interaction is teaching someone what it means to be part of a community.

✨ Let’s build one worth passing on.

💬 What do you hope the next generation remembers about growing up in our town?

Mental health reminder: Parenting burnout isn’t caused by loving your children less. It’s often the result of prolonged stress without enough time to recover.

You don’t have to earn rest.

💙 A cared-for parent is better equipped to care for others.
