Our brain is a complex system that supplies us with hormones that we perceive as happiness. And these hormones are a “reward system” based on the lifestyles & actions that helped our ancestors to survive/reproduce in their environment. An environment that is quite different from today’s.
•We had daily sun exposure, which keeps the brain alert & decisive
•We slept when the sun was down, reducing stress, boosting recovering, & respecting circadian rhythms
•Just a few handfuls of carbs or fats mostly required gathering & endurance work
•Hunting & fishing required regular resistance exercise & even more endurance work
•Often food was scarce & hunts unsuccessful which required intermittent fasting & normal periods hunger
•“Skinny” was not a sign of health or fertility, & considered LESS “attractive”
•Strength was a sign of one’s ability to provide safety or food, & weakness implied the opposite
•Some days required above normal heat exposure, cold exposure, & cold bathing in rivers
•We formed healthy bonds of love with others that led to tribes which allowed a community of support & safety
•Those within the tribe that did not contribute simply didn’t get to reproduce or survive
Those of us that survived this era and reproduced passed on the genetics that have beneficial responses to these hormetic stresses & lifestyles. Caloric deficits, hunger, whole foods, moderation, sleep, sunlight, endurance, strength, heat/cold exposure... all good for us. When we do what’s best for our physical health, the reward system in our brains respond to what’s good for us with hormones that literally make us happy.
Happiness is a mindset. But, we need to grasp as a society that this mindset has a chemical foundation. Not social media validation, not our addictions, & not pharmaceuticals. It starts with our food, our exposure to nature, our relationships, & disciple among abundance. The sooner we look at these aspects of life as sources of happiness, the sooner our society as a whole will grasp that isn’t something you chase. Happiness & health is something you create.”
