Susan Stacey joins the show for a deep dive into emergent curriculum--what it really means, what is looks like in practice, and why it still matters in early childhood settings.

Her book Emergent Curriculum in Early Childhood Settings reminds us that "emergent curriculum requires the disposition of genuine curiosity about children and their play" and that "a teacher who is curious, who wonders why children are doing a particular thing in a particular way, will be genuinely interested in finding a meaningful response."

Gennie Gorback and Kate Allen Fox want to help parents (and others!) understand how play can unlock many wonderful possibilities--and unexpected joys--for their families. Because, as they say, there's no such thing as "just play." Play isn't just anything; it is everything.

Their book Go Play: How Parents Can Empower Kids to Build Their Own Worlds is really wonderful.

Have you heard about the canary in the coal mine?

It was an old safety practice with coal miners to protect them from harmful toxins in the air of the mines--a caged canary would be taken into the mine and miners would know if the canary was harmed by the air, it was not safe.

In this conversation, Denita Dinger and I use this as a metaphor for what we can learn about the messages children's behavior may be trying to convey about their experiences in our spaces.

I'm finally getting caught up on the YouTube channel! Get ready, because I'll be sharing a lot of videos today!

Kisa Marx has written an amazing and important book and we are so grateful she is here to have the first of what we hope are many conversations about it.

In We Are Who We're Waiting For: Transformative Change in Early Childhood Education, Kisa lays out necessary truths about humanity, children's rights, and intersectionality with love and vision. Get out your pens, notebooks, and yes, your highlighters, for this one.

This week's episode was so fun to record--Sam Balch is my guest, and we recorded IN PERSON, in my office. We were fired up, and it shows!

Listen in as we discuss a classic Jim Greenman article from Exchange magazine that was published in the 1990's and still demands our attention. In the article, Greenman asks, "how institutional are you?"

In 1992, Jim Greenman wrote an article called "Places for Childhoods--How Institutional Are You?" that has been, without exaggeration, in host Heather Bernt-Santy's mind at least once a week since she discovered it early in her career. And what fun! Sam Balch was in town to join her for a conversati...

Celebrating Play, Honouring Rights- All year long!

As we at ARCQE continue to engage and support educators in advancing children's rights throughout the year, we are pleased to recognize the International Day of Play, celebrated globally each June. This important occasion highlights play as a fundamental right of every child and as an essential foundation for thinking, learning, well-being, and development. In alignment with our ongoing focus on relationships, wonder, and belonging, we invite Early Childhood Educators to join us in reflecting on and strengthening their practice as we build momentum toward National Child Day.

Together, as a community of learners and advocates, we invite all of you to join with us in welcoming Heather Bernt-Santy, M.A. Ed., also known as That Early Childhood Nerd. With over 30 years of experience working alongside children, families, and caregivers, Heather brings a deep and joyful commitment to the field she has “very-nearly-almost” loved every minute of. She is a passionate believer in children’s right to play and in the science that affirms what we know in our bones: "play is a right." Through her consulting, webinars, and podcast That Early Childhood Nerd, Heather continues to inspire educators to think deeply and differently about childhood.

Together, we will reflect on what it means to act as play advocates in today’s early learning landscape—holding space for children’s joy, agency, well-being, identity, and belonging, while reimagining environments where curiosity, inquiry, and co-learning are genuinely honoured.
Drawing inspiration from Using Schema Play Theory to Advocate for Free Play in Early Childhood, this gathering calls us back to what matters most: children’s right to live fully, wonder deeply, and play freely.

Two options to choose from:
June 25 - 12:00 - 2:00
June 25 - 6:30 - 8:30
Investment: $30.00
