๐ŸŒฟ DID YOU KNOW YOUR KITCHEN MIGHT ALREADY CONTAIN "KIDNEY HERBS?" ๐ŸŒฟ

When people think about herbal medicine, they often imagine some rare plant that has to be ordered from halfway around the world.

Meanwhile...

Dandelions are growing in the yard.
Corn silk is getting thrown in the trash.
Rosemary is sitting in the spice cabinet.
And Nettles have been used as food AND medicine for generations. ๐ŸŒฟ

Traditional herbalism was largely built around learning how to use the plants available to us.

Take DANDELION.

๐ŸŒผ The leaves have traditionally been used for urinary support and as a gentle diuretic.

๐ŸŒฟ The root has traditionally been used as a bitter tonic supporting digestion and liver function.

๐ŸŒผ The flowers have their own traditional food and topical uses.

One plant. Multiple plant parts. Different purposes.

THAT is the part of herbalism I absolutely love teaching.

Herbal medicine isn't just memorizing:
"Take this herb for that problem."

It's learning the plants, understanding their actions and figuring out whenโ€”and when NOTโ€”to use them.

So let's have some fun today:

๐Ÿ‘‡ How many of these have you used?

๐ŸŒผ Dandelion
๐ŸŒฟ Nettle
๐ŸŒฝ Corn Silk
๐ŸŒฟ Cleavers
๐ŸŒผ Goldenrod
๐ŸŒฟ Marshmallow Root

Give yourself ONE POINT for every one you've used and drop your score in the comments! ๐Ÿ˜‚๐ŸŒฟ

And if your score is ZERO...we've clearly got some herbal education to do!

Stop by the apothecary and see us, or shop with us online. Our Kidney Care Tea is available both in-store and on our website. ๐Ÿ’š

๐ŸŒฟHERBAL DIGESTIVE BITTERS โ€” What Are They & Why Would You Use Them?

Sometimes supporting digestion starts before the first bite.

Digestive bitters are an old-school herbal tradition that uses naturally bitter and aromatic herbs to help wake up the digestive system. That bitter taste on your tongue can signal your body that food is coming, encouraging normal digestive secretions and helping prepare the stomach and digestive tract for a meal.

Our Herbal Digestive Bitters are made right here in our shop with homemade Apple Cider Vinegar and a blend of herbs traditionally used for digestive support:

๐ŸŒฑ Dandelion Root โ€” A classic bitter herb traditionally used to support healthy digestion, liver function, and bile flow.

๐Ÿซš Ginger Rootโ€” Warming and stimulating, ginger has a long history of use for occasional nausea, bloating, gas, and sluggish digestion.

๐ŸŒผ Chamomile โ€” More than a bedtime herb! Chamomile has traditionally been used to soothe the digestive tract and is especially lovely when digestive upset seems to show up alongside stress.

๐ŸŠ Orange Peelโ€” Aromatic, slightly bitter, and traditionally used to encourage digestion while helping with occasional gas and bloating.

๐ŸŒฟ Fennel Seed โ€” One of my favorite digestive herbs! Fennel is traditionally used after meals to ease occasional gas, fullness, and bloating.

๐ŸŒฑ Licorice Root โ€” Traditionally used as a soothing herb for the stomach and digestive tract while also helping round out our bitter formula.

๐ŸŽ Homemade Apple Cider Vinegar โ€” Our vinegar base extracts the beautiful properties of these herbs while giving the finished bitters their wonderfully tangy bite.

So, when would you use digestive bitters?

They can be especially helpful as part of your routine shortly before meals, particularly when you tend to experience that heavy, overly-full feeling, occasional bloating or gas after eating.

And here's the important part: bitters are supposed to taste bitter! ๐Ÿ˜‚ That taste is part of the experience. Don't immediately chase them with something sweet, let those bitter flavors hit your taste buds.

๐ŸŒฟ Simple herbs. Traditional wisdom. Everyday digestive support.

Stop by Folk Medicine Farm Apothecary and ask us about our Herbal Digestive Bitters! ๐Ÿ’š

Herbal products are not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent disease. Licorice root and some bitter herbs may not be appropriate for everyone, including during pregnancy or with certain medications or health conditions. Ask your healthcare provider if you're unsure.

Your kidneys do a whole lot of work behind the scenes. ๐Ÿ’š

They help filter waste from the blood, balance fluids and electrolytes, support healthy blood pressure, and help keep the body's internal environment in balance.

And yet, kidney health is something most of us don't think about until there's a problem.

This month at Folk Medicine Farm, we're putting a little extra focus on KIDNEY HEALTHโ€”and talking about some of the simple, everyday ways we can support these hardworking organs.

๐ŸŒฟ HERB OF THE MONTH: DANDELION ROOT

Yepโ€”the same dandelion so many people spend their summers trying to get rid of!

Dandelion has a LONG history of use in traditional herbal medicine. Both the leaf and root have been used, although they have slightly different herbal traditions.

Dandelion root is traditionally used as a bitter digestive and liver-supporting herb, while dandelion leaf has traditionally been used to support healthy urinary flow.

Our Dandelion Root Tincture gives you an easy way to incorporate this humble little plant into your herbal routine.

One of my favorite things about dandelion is that it reminds us that some of our most valuable herbs aren't exotic or hard to findโ€”they're growing right beneath our feet. ๐ŸŒผ

๐ŸŒผ THIS MONTH'S FEATURE: DANDELION ROOT TINCTURE

If you've been wanting to learn more about dandelion or add this traditional herb to your home apothecary, stop by the shop and let us show you our Dandelion Root Tincture.

And rememberโ€”supporting your body doesn't have to be complicated.

Drink your water.
Eat nourishing foods.
Move your body.
Pay attention to your blood pressure and blood sugar.
And give those hardworking kidneys a little love. ๐Ÿ’š

๐Ÿ’ง YOUR KIDNEYS NEED WATER โ€” BUT MORE ISN'T ALWAYS BETTER! ๐Ÿ’ง

Let's keep our KIDNEY HEALTH conversation going and talk about something incredibly simple: HYDRATION.

Your kidneys are working around the clock filtering your blood, removing waste and excess fluid, and helping maintain the body's delicate balance of water and electrolytes.

And WATER plays an important role in that process. ๐Ÿ’ฆ

Especially during a HOT Georgia summer when we're sweating just walking from the house to the car. ๐Ÿ˜‚โ˜€๏ธ

So how can you stay better hydrated?

๐Ÿ’ง Sip fluids throughout the day instead of realizing at 8 PM that you've barely had anything to drink.

๐Ÿ’ง Carry a reusable water bottle. If it's beside you, you're much more likely to drink it!

๐Ÿ’ง Eat your water! Watermelon, cucumbers, berries, peaches, tomatoes and other water-rich foods contribute to your overall fluid intake.

๐Ÿ’ง Make water more interesting. Add lemon, lime, cucumber, mint or fresh fruit.

๐ŸŒฟ And don't forget about HERBAL TEA!

Herbal tea can be another delicious source of fluid. Brew your favorite blend, let it cool and pour it over ice for an easy summertime drink.

Our Kidney Care Tea contains:
๐ŸŒฟ Tulsi
๐ŸŒผ Calendula
๐ŸŒฟ Astragalus
๐ŸŒผ Dandelion
๐ŸŒฟ Milk Thistle
๐ŸŒฟ Rosemary
๐ŸŒผ St. John's Wort
๐Ÿ’™ Butterfly Pea Flower

It makes a beautiful herbal tea served hot OR cold!

One important note: MORE water isn't always better. Some people with kidney or heart conditions are actually prescribed fluid restrictions. Your individual hydration needs can also change with heat, activity, medications and health conditions.

Listen to your bodyโ€”and if your healthcare provider has given you specific fluid instructions, FOLLOW THEM. โค๏ธ

๐ŸŒฟ Kidney Care Tea is available IN STORE + ONLINE!

Come see us, grab a bag and turn that afternoon glass of something sugary into a beautiful glass of iced herbal tea. ๐ŸงŠ๐ŸŒฟ

๐ŸŒฟ HERBS + KIDNEY HEALTH ๐ŸŒฟ
Let's open the herbal medicine cabinet!

There isn't one magical "kidney herb." Herbalists traditionally look at the WHOLE person and what kind of support we're trying to provide.

Here are a few plants you may come across when studying traditional kidney and urinary herbalism:

๐ŸŒผ DANDELION LEAF โ€” Traditionally used as a gentle diuretic to support normal urine flow.

๐ŸŒฟ NETTLE LEAF โ€” A mineral-rich nutritive herb with a long history of traditional use for urinary wellness.

๐ŸŒฝ CORN SILK โ€” Yep, those silky strands you pull off an ear of corn! Corn silk has traditionally been used as a soothing urinary herb.

๐ŸŒฟ MARSHMALLOW ROOT โ€” Rich in mucilage and traditionally used when soothing support for irritated tissues is desired.

๐ŸŒฟ CLEAVERS โ€” Traditionally associated with lymphatic and urinary support and often included in old-school spring herbal formulas.

๐ŸŒฟ GOLDENROD โ€” Despite its reputation during allergy season, Goldenrod has a long history of traditional use in urinary-system herbalism.

๐ŸŒผ DANDELION ROOT โ€” More closely associated with liver and digestive support than direct urinary support, but an excellent example of how herbalists may support several of the body's elimination pathways rather than focusing on one organ alone.

One thing I REALLY want people to understand:

"Natural" doesn't mean every herb is appropriate for every kidney condition.

If someone already has chronic kidney disease, reduced kidney function, electrolyte abnormalities, takes medications, is on dialysis, has undergone kidney surgery, or has another significant medical condition, herbs that change urine output or provide concentrated minerals may NOT be appropriate.

That's why responsible herbalism matters. โค๏ธ

Want to learn more about herbs? Come see me! This is exactly why I love having a brick-and-mortar apothecaryโ€”you aren't just grabbing a bottle off a shelf. You can ASK QUESTIONS. ๐ŸŒฟ

And while you're here, check out our Kidney Care Tea!
