Ohana Care Connections would like to introduce another incredible member of our Ohana, Carlos🌺💛
With Carlos' permission, we would like to share his story.
Sometimes the calls we receive at Ohana Care Connections are not just about finding an assisted living—they're about helping someone survive long enough to get there.
Recently, Taylor Mauhili, President & CEO of Ohana Care Connections, received an emergency call from a local agency regarding a senior in desperate need of help.
After learning more about his situation, Taylor immediately reached out and connected with Carlos.
Carlos was living in a motel with very little food, limited clothing, and few basic necessities. He needed hygiene products, support, advocacy, and most importantly, a safe place to call home.
Without hesitation, Taylor began gathering resources.
She went through clothing donations that had been generously provided to Ohana Care Connections, packed a suitcase full of clothes, gathered hygiene products, purchased food to help Carlos get through until his move, and even bought him a new pair of tennis shoes after learning how badly he needed them.
Once everything was ready, Taylor drove out to Carlos's motel room to deliver the supplies personally.
The moment Carlos received the food, clothing, and shoes, he became emotional. He was overwhelmed with gratitude and moved to tears knowing that someone cared enough to help. This 3 hour long first in-person meeting has made such a huge impact in Taylor and Carlos' life.
Carlos shared stories about his life, his health, the challenges he had faced, and the circumstances that had led him to where he was. Despite everything he had endured, he remained kind, grateful, and full of humor.
After putting on his new shoes, he smiled and said:
"These are the most comfortable shoes I've had in a long time. I can't tell you how long it's been since I've had tennis shoes."
Taylor jokingly nicknamed him "The Flash," although Carlos quickly replied that he might be the slowest-moving Flash around😊
Even in the midst of difficult circumstances, he never lost his sense of humor.
This journey could not have been accomplished alone.
A special thank you to Living Waters Hospice, who immediately stepped in to provide exceptional medical care while Carlos awaited placement. Their team also went out of their way to ensure he had food and additional support during this critical time.
The day finally arrived when Carlos was ready to move into his assisted living community.
Taylor helped pack his belongings, load the vehicle, and get him safely on his way to his new home.
Like many seniors facing a major life transition, Carlos was nervous. But he was also excited knowing that he would finally have the care, stability, and support he deserved.
These are the types of calls Ohana Care Connections receives every day.
Calls about seniors who are scared, vulnerable, alone, and in need of someone to advocate for them.
Someone to help them navigate the healthcare system.
Someone to help them find hope.
Someone to remind them that they matter.
Today, Carlos is safe, cared for, and surrounded by support.
And just like every senior and family we have the privilege of serving, Carlos will forever be a part of our Ohana.
We are incredibly grateful that we were able to walk alongside him and help him find his forever home.
It is our mission to make you feel like part of our Ohana. Together, no one is left behind or forgotten🌺💛
