Parenting a child with complex mental health needs often means being a caregiver, advocate, crisis responder, therapist, and parent—all at the same time.
If you’re feeling emotionally exhausted, constantly on alert, or like you’ve lost pieces of yourself along the way, you’re not alone. These feelings don’t mean you love your child any less—they may be signs of parental burnout.
Signs of parental burnout may include:
🧠 Feeling emotionally drained or numb
😴 Constant fatigue, even after rest
💭 Increased worry, irritability, or hopelessness
💔 Feeling disconnected from yourself or your loved ones
⚠️ Difficulty finding joy in activities you once enjoyed
Ways to care for yourself:
🌿 Take small moments to regulate your own nervous system with deep breathing, stretching, or a short walk.
🤝 Build a support network—you don’t have to carry everything alone.
📅 Schedule time for yourself, even if it’s only 10–15 minutes.
❤️ Practice self-compassion. You’re navigating challenges many people never see.
🧑⚕️ Consider seeking support from a mental health professional or caregiver support group.
Remember: You cannot pour from an empty cup. Caring for your own mental health isn’t taking away from your child—it’s strengthening your ability to continue showing up for them.
You deserve support, too.
