This new study is huge
"" Elliot, why are you so obsessed with thiamine? Its just one vitamin ""
Practically everyone one of the main neurodegenerative disease show evidence of tissue level thiamine deficiency
It occurs in the exact regions of the brain most affected by the disease
Why? Are these people deficient?
No.
The evidence does not suggest this is caused by a diet low in thiamine. It can occur regardless of dietary intake
This new study shows tissue-specific deficiency can be caused by OXIDATIVE STRESS of any origin.
Thiamine becomes oxidized. It is no longer "active" and cant be used
Cells lose the capacity to generate ATP and the cholinergic system is destroyed
This is extremely important. Because oxidative stress is a key feature of most chronic health conditions
This would also mean that tissue-specific thiamine deficiency can theoretically occur in almost every condition involving oxidative stress.
It then logically follows that anyone with a chronic health condition could be a candidate for trialling thiamine supplementation.
When this occurs in the brain, or any other tissue/compartment, it will not show up on any available test.
Interestingly, they found that administration of high dose thiamine OR vitamin D3 reduced the oxidative burden and prevents oxidation of thiamine into inactive derivatives.
