Healthcare supply chain leaders have spent the last several years navigating a difficult balancing act.

On one hand, global sourcing can help control costs and expand access to products. On the other, recent disruptions have highlighted the risks of overreliance on any single region, supplier, or transportation network.

The conversation should not be framed as onshore or offshore. It is about building a supply chain that is secure, sustainable, and resilient enough to support patient care when conditions change.

That means:
✅ Understanding critical dependencies
✅ Diversifying supplier relationships
✅ Strengthening logistics and inventory strategies
✅ Collaborating across industry, healthcare, and government partners
✅ Investing in workforce, data, and long-term resilience

The most effective healthcare supply chains are not built around a single sourcing strategy. They are built around flexibility, visibility, and the ability to adapt.

How is your organization approaching the balance between cost, resilience, and supply assurance?

Healthcare supply chains face a difficult balancing act: cost, availability, resilience, and risk rarely move in the same direction.

As healthcare organizations continue to evaluate sourcing strategies, the conversation is shifting beyond a simple onshore versus offshore debate.

Questions about country of origin, supply continuity, geopolitical uncertainty, and long-term resilience are forcing leaders to rethink what a secure supply chain really looks like.

For some, the answer may be increased domestic manufacturing. For others, it may be supplier diversification, dual sourcing, or stronger strategic partnerships. Regardless of the approach, one thing is becoming clear: resilience cannot be an afterthought.

The challenge is not just where products are made. It's how healthcare organizations build supply chains capable of withstanding disruption while continuing to support patient care.

What role do you think healthcare providers should play in shaping sourcing decisions and supply chain strategy?

Choosing the right supplier is important. Choosing the right process to evaluate them is just as important.

That is where a Request for Proposal (RFP) comes in.

An RFP is a structured way for organizations to compare potential suppliers, products, services, or solutions against the same set of requirements.

Rather than relying on sales presentations alone, the process provides a standardized way to evaluate capabilities, implementation approaches, pricing, service levels, and long-term value.

In healthcare supply chain, RFPs are often used for major sourcing decisions, technology investments, distribution agreements, and contracted services.

They help organizations look beyond upfront cost and assess factors such as reliability, scalability, support, and overall fit.

Done well, an RFP creates a fair, transparent process that allows teams to make informed decisions with confidence.
Because the goal is not simply to select a vendor.

It is to select the right partner for the challenge you're trying to solve.

Why do clinicians stash supplies?

Most of the time, it's not about inventory. It's about trust.
When caregivers worry that a needed item won't be available when and where they need it, they create their own safety stock. The result is hidden inventory, inaccurate demand signals, wasted products, and unnecessary spending.

The challenge isn't simply finding supplies that have been tucked away in drawers, lockers, and cabinets. It's understanding the operational issues that led to the behavior in the first place.

Organizations that improve supply availability, standardize replenishment processes, and build confidence with frontline teams often find that hoarding decreases on its own.

Supply chain isn't just about managing products. It's about creating reliability.

Have you ever encountered supply hoarding in a healthcare setting? What do you think drives it most?

Does the C-suite truly understand healthcare supply chain operations?

Healthcare executives regularly discuss patient care, financial performance, workforce challenges, and strategic priorities. Yet much of what makes those goals possible happens behind the scenes in healthcare supply chain.

From managing shortages and recalls to supporting clinical teams and ensuring the right products are available at the right time, supply chain professionals are solving critical problems every day.

But how often do organizational leaders get a firsthand look at that work?

Understanding often starts with observation. Sometimes a day spent in receiving, inventory management, distribution, sourcing, or value analysis can reveal challenges and opportunities that never appear on a dashboard.

Healthcare supply chain professionals are responsible for making sure the right product is in the right place at the right time.

When that happens, it can be almost invisible.

When it doesn’t, patient care can stop.

A missing item can delay a procedure. A backorder can force a clinical alternative. An inventory error can send someone scrambling minutes before a case.

And behind all of that is a workforce sourcing, receiving, stocking, tracking, and delivering the supplies healthcare depends on every day.

So here is the question:

Does compensation reflect that level of responsibility?

If you could fill in the blank on this paycheck, what should a healthcare supply chain professional make?

Hourly or annually. Put your number in the comments.

"No longer can we sit by and watch our hospital’s supply expense leaks get bigger and bigger. We need to plug them now, so we can help our hospital sustain a healthy bottom line. If we wait any longer to do so, it will be more difficult to fix these seepages when the whole building is falling down..."
