Almost 50: 23 Lessons I've Learned Along the Way

Lesson #5: Faith Doesn't Eliminate Fear, It Helps You Walk Through It

One of the greatest gifts I've been given in life is my faith.

I didn't develop it overnight.

I developed it by watching it.

As a little girl, I would watch my maternal grandmother read her Bible and pray. She wasn't just teaching me about God with her wordsβ€”she was teaching me through her actions.

She taught me how to pray.

She taught me that God is faithful.

She taught me that when life becomes uncertain, prayer is still an option.

My paternal grandfather was a deacon and Sunday school teacher for many years. Through him, I learned the importance of service, commitment, and living out your beliefs.

I was baptized around the age of 11 or 12, and as my faith continued to grow, something beautiful happened.

My father began asking questions.

We would talk about church, prayer, and my experiences growing spiritually. Over time, those conversations led him back to church, and he eventually recommitted his life to God.

Looking back, that remains one of the most meaningful experiences I've witnessed.

Over the years, life has given me many reasons to be afraid.

I've experienced loss.

I've faced uncertainty.

I've had moments where I didn't know what the next step should be.

I've had seasons where the vision was clear, but the path wasn't.

And if I'm honest, fear still shows up from time to time.

But faith taught me something important:

Faith doesn't eliminate fear.

Faith gives you the courage to keep moving while fear is present.

Faith is what reminds me that I don't have to have all the answers.

Faith is what helps me trust when I cannot see the outcome.

Faith is what reminds me that even in my darkest moments, I am never walking alone.

Not because life is always easy.

Not because challenges disappear.

But because God is with me.

As I approach 50, I can honestly say there were many seasons I would not have made it through without my faith.

It has been one of the pillars of my life.

One of my anchors.

One of my greatest sources of strength.

πŸ’™ Lesson #5: Faith doesn't require certainty. It requires trust. Fear may ride along on the journey, but faith keeps you moving forward.

"Looking back, I realize there were times I thought I was holding on to God, when in reality, God was holding on to me." πŸ’™

Almost 50: 23 Lessons I've Learned Along the Way

Lesson #4: Healing Is Hard, But Worth It

One of the most important lessons I've learned in life is that healing is not easy.
In fact, sometimes healing feels harder than staying the same.

When I was in graduate school, I came to a realization that changed my life.
I was carrying a lot of anger.

Underneath that anger were years of hurt, disappointment, grief, unanswered questions, and a whole lot of "Why?"

And after my mother passed away when I was 21 years old, those questions only grew louder.

The truth is, there were people in my life who loved me enough to tell me what I couldn't fully see myself.

They pointed out the anger.
The yelling.
The defensiveness.
The fact that I was often ready for a verbal fight and, if necessary back then, a physical one too.

So I made a decision that would ultimately change the course of my life.

I went to therapy.

In therapy, I talked about my childhood, having parents' divorce, relationship breakups, and grief.

For the first time, someone helped me understand that I wasn't just reacting to circumstances.
I was reacting to my thoughts about those circumstances.
My therapist introduced me to Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), and it challenged everything I thought I knew.

I learned that thoughts influence emotions, and emotions influence behaviors.

I learned to pause and ask myself:
"Is there actual evidence to support this thought?"
I learned how to challenge assumptions.
How to reframe negative thinking.
How to look for the silver lining without denying reality.

And let me tell you...

It was WORK.

There were days I wanted to hold onto those old thought patterns because they felt familiar.

Sometimes it seemed easier to stay angry. Easier to stay stuck. Easier to keep telling myself the stories I had repeated for years.

But those stories were no longer serving me.
Many of them weren't even true.
They were narratives I had developed to make sense of pain.

As I did the work, life began to open up.
My relationships improved.
My perspective expanded.
My peace increased.

Things became clearer.
Looking back now, I realize healing didn't change my past.

It changed how I carried it.

πŸ’™ Lesson #4: Healing is hard because it requires us to confront what we've learned to avoid.

But on the other side of that work is freedom, clarity, and a life that feels lighter.

And I can tell you from experience...
It is absolutely worth it.

Stay Blessed πŸ™Œ Everyone! Do the work...

Almost 50: 23 Lessons I've Learned Along the Way

Lesson #3: Not Everyone Is Meant to Go With You

This lesson took me years to fully understand.
When I was younger, I believed that if people started the journey with you, they were supposed to finish it with you.

Life taught me otherwise.
Some people are assigned to a season.
Some are assigned to a lesson.
Some are assigned to help you become who you're meant to be.
And some are assigned to reveal who you're not meant to become.

Over the years, I've experienced friendships that changed, relationships that ended, opportunities that disappeared, and people I deeply cared about choosing a different path.

At first, those losses felt personal.
Now I understand that growth often requires movement, and movement sometimes creates distance.

Not everyone is equipped for the next level of your journey.
Not everyone will understand your vision.
Not everyone will celebrate your growth.
And that's okay.

One of the healthiest things I've learned is that you can love people, appreciate what they contributed to your life, and still acknowledge that their role in your story has changed.

Growth isn't just about learning what to hold onto.
It's also about learning what to release.

As I approach 50, I carry gratitude for every person who has walked beside me, whether they stayed for a chapter or the entire book.

Each person taught me something.
Each season served a purpose.
And each ending made room for a new beginning.

πŸ’™ Lesson #3: Not everyone is meant to go with you. Some people are part of your journey, but not your destination.

"Stop grieving people who were assigned to a chapter when God only intended them for a page." πŸ’™

I didn't build my business because conditions were perfect.
I built it while working overnight shifts in corrections as a social worker.

There were nights I left work exhausted, came home emotionally drained, and still sat down to work on my dream because something inside of me refused to let the vision go.
Within 6 months, I generated $65,000 in my private practice while still working my full-time job.

But the money wasn't the biggest lesson.

The lessons were.
Here are 10 lessons I learned during that season:
βœ… Clarity is power. A clear vision will carry you when motivation fades.
βœ… Consistency compounds. Small actions repeated daily create extraordinary results over time.
βœ… Discipline beats motivation. Motivation comes and goes. Discipline stays.
βœ… Strategy matters. Building responsibly is often better than moving recklessly.
βœ… Faith is a business asset. There were moments when faith carried me farther than confidence ever could.
βœ… Your support system matters. Success is rarely built alone.
βœ… Progress is not always visible. Some of your greatest growth happens behind the scenes.
βœ… Structure creates stability. Systems create freedom.
βœ… Stability creates growth. Growth becomes sustainable when it is built on a solid foundation.
βœ… Your current season is not your final destination. Keep building.

As a Black female clinician, ownership represented more than having a business.
It represented freedom.
Legacy.
Opportunity.
Impact.
And the ability to create something that could serve others while providing stability for my family.
If you're in a season where you're building something while balancing work, family, responsibilities, and uncertainty, I want you to hear this:
Don't quit on the vision because the journey feels difficult.
Some of the most meaningful things you'll ever build will be created during the seasons no one sees.

Your overnight may be preparing you for your breakthrough.

Almost 50: 23 Lessons I've Learned Along the Way

Lesson #2: Where You Come From Doesn't Have to Be Where You Stay

One of the most important lessons I've learned in almost 50 years is this:
Where you come from doesn't have to determine where you end up.

When I was four years old, my life changed in ways I couldn't fully understand at the time. After a flood destroyed most of what my mother had, we temporarily moved in with my grandmother while my mother worked to secure housing for us.

Eventually, we moved into low-income housing, where I would spend much of my childhood.

By then, my parents' divorce had already been finalized. While my mother carried the day-to-day responsibilities of raising me, my father remained consistently present in my life.

Looking back, I realize how much both of them shaped the woman I would become.

Growing up, there were things I saw and heard that no child should have to experience. Life was not always easy.

But there was another side to that story too.

There were people in my community who looked out for me. People who protected me, encouraged me, checked on me, and reminded me that I mattered. Their kindness left a lasting imprint on my life.

Somewhere along the way, I developed a belief that education would be my pathway to opportunity. I knew I needed to graduate high school. I knew I needed to get to college. I knew I wanted to build a different future.

So I became determined.

I listened.

I observed.

I asked questions.

I learned from people who had gone before me.

I reflected on my choices.

And I made intentional decisions, one step at a time.

My father often told me:
"It's okay to cry, kid. It's okay to be sad. But what are you going to do about it?"

That lesson taught me responsibility, resilience, and personal accountability.

My mother taught me something equally important.
She showed me how to be kind.
How to help others.
How to stay grounded.
And how to stand up for myself when necessary.

Together, they helped shape both my strength and my compassion.

As I reflect on my journey, I realize that those experiences developed a level of independence and confidence that continues to serve me today.

Not because life was easy, but because I learned early that circumstances do not have the final say
Your environment may influence your starting point.

It does not have to define your destination.

πŸ’™ Lesson #2: Your beginnings may shape your story, but they do not have to limit your future.

Don't let your current circumstances introduce you to a future that doesn't belong to you." πŸ’™

πŸ’™ A Quick Reminder From Never Journey Alone πŸ’™

Life doesn't always go according to plan.

Some seasons bring uncertainty, disappointment, unexpected challenges, and questions we don't yet have answers for. In those moments, it can be easy to become consumed by everything that feels outside of our control.

Today, I want to encourage you to pause.

Take a deep breath.
Focus on what you can control:
βœ”οΈ Your attitude
βœ”οΈ Your effort
βœ”οΈ Your boundaries
βœ”οΈ Your self-care
βœ”οΈ Your gratitude
βœ”οΈ Your next right step

The things you cannot control will continue to exist whether you worry about them or not. But when you redirect your energy toward what is within your influence, you create space for peace, clarity, and growth.

You may not be able to change everything around you, but you can choose how you respond to it.
Keep moving forward. Keep believing. Keep showing up for yourself.

And remember...

Almost 50: Lessons I've Learned Along the Way – Lesson #1

I Can Be Anything I Want To Be.

As far back as I can remember, my father planted a seed in me that would shape the course of my life.
He would tell me, "You can be anything you want to be."

At the time, they were just words. But as I grew older, those words became belief. That belief became confidence. And that confidence became action.

Over the years, I have been many things: daughter, mother, social worker, therapist, business owner, mentor, speaker, leader, and advocate.

None of those roles came without challenges. There were setbacks, disappointments, failures, and moments when the vision felt bigger than my circumstances.
But every time I doubted myself, I could still hear my father's voice reminding me what was possible.

One of the greatest gifts we can give ourselves is permission to believe that our future does not have to be limited by our current circumstances.
As I approach 50, I am grateful for a father who taught me to dream beyond what I could see.

And if no one has told you lately:
You are capable of more than you think. Your story is still being written. And you can become more than you ever imagined.

πŸ’™ Lesson #1: Believe in your possibilities before you see the evidence.
