Lumbar radiculopathy can be a very debilitating condition. After a trial of conservative therapies, NSAIDs, Physical Therapy, and Epidural Steroids injections some patients may experience intractable pain. After failing conservative treatment, surgical removal of the disk fragment/herniation can help alleviate radicular pain. Traditional open surgery requires dissection and retraction of the paraspinal muscles off the spine. Minimally invasive tubular retractors can be used to lessen the disruption of paraspinal muscles. An endoscopic approach can significantly lessen the degree of tissue disruption required to perform surgical decompression. Last week, I was able to utilize a Joimax endoscope to remove an L5-S1 disc herniation via an interlaminar appoach through a subcentimeter (

EXPOSURE to NEUROSURERY is the 🔑 motivating step to determining if someone can envision themselves BECOMING A NEUROSURGEON! The first time I saw the BRAIN 🧠 PULSATING during surgery when I was a medical student, I knew I was HOOKED! Having the opportunity to directly view the organ responsible for making us who we are is truly a privilege. Being able to be operate on this magnificent organ is truly a Blessing that comes with great responsibility.

Yesterday, I had the pleasure of introducing a UNLV ENT Intern to Neurosurgery! Internship is a very exciting time filled with the first opportunity for Real Responsibility and a Longer White Coat 😉 It is the first time you will make decisions that can impact the lives of others. It is also the moment you realize how truly fascinating and complex medicine can be. It is truly learning on the job. I remember the most important thing I learned during my Internship year was that no matter how much you think you know, you are not even close to scratching the surface of the knowledge you need to acquire. It is daunting but it propels you to become a lifelong learner and an active seeker of knowledge. I remember my Internship very well. I am thankful for every attending , co-resident, nurse, and patient who contributed to my education. I will forever be indebted to YOU! It is because of You that I am compelled to Pay it Forward and Give Back to help those who will come after me. It’s safe to say that First day of Neurosurgery was much more exciting than my 1st day of Neurosurgery. Swipe Right to see a representation of my First Day of Neurosurgery! And always a pleasure to work with my favorite TikToker @ UNLV School of Medicine

This past week we have seen many posts on social media centered around the . WOMEN Empowering WOMEN. It is truly remarkable and uplifting to see women supporting one another. It helps to continually shine a light on a long-standing struggle for EQUALITY for WOMEN. In the same manner that I feel the social injustices present in the world today will not be solved by isolated recognition by those disenfranchised, I strongly believe change will only come by universal recognition of the need for Equality for All. As MEN WE SHOULD ALSO SUPPORT WOMEN! I would like to RECOGNIZE and HONOR the WOMAN, Leticia Cox, MD, who has been by my side from day one for this extraordinary journey. Every Strong Man has had a Strong Woman by his side (not behind him) @ Las Vegas, Nevada

Intradural Spinal Tumors are very rare. Spinal Schwannomas can occur on average 0.3-0.5/ 100,000 individuals annually. When they occur patients can present with profound neurological sequelae. A middle aged man presented with weakness (affecting his Lower Extremities and L Upper Extremity) and urinary retention.
When operating on these tumors, one must carefully utilize microsurgical technique to safely resect the tumor and avoid causing paralysis. A C4-C7 posterior cervical laminoplasty partial T1 laminectomy was performed. The dura was opened and the denticulate ligaments were cut to allow for mobilization and safe resection of this Ventral Cervical Schwannoma. The patient did very well. He walked into his follow-up appointment and had regained bladder function! He was able to perform all of his activities of daily living Independently! @ Las Vegas, Nevada

Most often patients develop Intracranial hemorrhages (ICH) from uncontrolled hypertension. Some ICHs are caused by vascular lesions. This patient had a cerebellar hemorrhage due to an Arteriovenous Malformation (AVM). Patient developed hydrocephalus requiring an external ventriculostomy drain for CSF diversion. The AVM was not amenable to embolization prior to resection. I performed a suboccipital craniotomy for resection of the AVM.

I was Blessed to have the Best Role Model I could have ever ask for in my life. Everything seen in me as a Man, Father, Husband, and Doctor came from You Dad!

As an African American, many of us do not often have access to seeing people who look like ourselves in the medical profession. Seeing someone who looks like you is galvanizing. It serves as a catalyst for changing thoughts of impossible to possible. There is an underrepresentation of African Americans in medicine, 5 percent. This is often the reason why those of us who choose to pursue this honorable calling of becoming a physician can experience the “imposter syndrome” whereby the individual sometimes feels he or she may not belong despite all the evidence of one’s own excellence.

Dad, your journey to become an Orthopaedic Hand Surgeon was anything but easy to say the least. As a medical student, you almost lost your life as you were hit head on by a bus riding your bicycle home from class. You were not expected to survive. Not only did you survive, you accomplished your lifelong goal of becoming a doctor. Witnessing how you lead by example has always protected me from ever doubting myself. It is because of You that I Know I Was Called To Be A Neurosurgeon!

Thank you for exceeding all expectations. You have shown All Five of Us how to become Men of Excellence. Even inspired 3 of us to follow your footsteps into medicine.
