Reassurance Isn’t Neutral: How Therapists Can Avoid Reinforcing OCD in Session

Reassurance often feels supportive in the moment—but in OCD, it can unintentionally reinforce the obsession–compulsion cycle over time.

This post explores:
🔍 How reassurance commonly shows up in therapy
🧠 Why it can maintain the OCD cycle
🛠️ Ways to respond without providing certainty—even outside of formal OCD treatment

If you work with clients who seek repeated reassurance and want to support them without reinforcing OCD, this is worth a read.

🧠 When OCD shows up in therapy, it doesn’t always look like avoidance.

Sometimes it looks like really good conversation.

If a session keeps circling the same question, brings brief relief, and then resets the next week—verbal rumination may be driving the process.

Insight doesn’t interrupt OCD.
Learning to tolerate uncertainty and align your values with your actions does.

Last week I shared that OCD.xyz is now an NBCC-Approved Continuing Education Provider — and the response was so wonderful. 🙏🏼
I wanted to go a little deeper on what this actually means, why I pursued it, and why I believe it matters for OCD education and the clients we serve. So I wrote a blog post about it.
Spoiler: it's not just a credential. For me, it's a form of advocacy.
